The Coffee Shop's next move: the Epson ColorWorks CW-C6000.

Same photo-quality color output they'd come to rely on, but built for their new reality:

• Faster print speed to match a growing SKU count without slowing the bagging line
• Peel-and-present mode, labels are automatically peeled from the liner and ready to apply, instead of a manual peel-and-place for every single bag
• Larger media capacity, so a shift running four different wholesale orders doesn't mean constant roll changes

The peel-and-present feature specifically solved their wholesale bottleneck: a staff member could keep pace with the bagging line instead of standing at the printer peeling labels by hand between batches.

Ideal daily volume for the C6000 sits right where The Coffee Shop landed, the "sweet spot" for operations that have graduated past startup volume but aren't yet running an industrial floor.

Eighteen months in, The Coffee Shop had a great problem again: they'd grown from 6 SKUs to 18, added two wholesale café accounts, and were bagging over 2,500 units a day.

The C4000 had done exactly its job, but the shop was now bumping into its ceiling:

• Daily volume creeping past the range it was built for
• Wholesale orders needing labels applied faster than a manual peel could keep up
• More SKUs meant more label changeovers per shift

This wasn't a sign the first printer was wrong. It was a sign the business had outgrown its first stage, the same way you'd outgrow a single espresso machine once you're running a full café bar.

Next week: the upgrade that matched their new pace.

“How much do custom labels cost?”

If you’ve ever asked a printer this question, you’ve probably heard the frustrating answer: it depends.

And while that answer may be annoying, there’s a reason for it. Label pricing depends on several factors, including quantity, size, material, finish, and color coverage.

Our latest blog breaks down exactly what moves the price—and how to tell whether a quote is actually fair.

Learn what to look for, what red flags to avoid, and why the lowest price isn’t always the best value.

Before on-demand printing, The Coffee Shop's owner dreaded the words "limited edition."

A great idea, sure, but also a $1,000 label order for a blend that might run for six weeks.

After: limited editions became a growth engine.

Their pumpkin spice cold brew blend, a 3-week seasonal run, generated their highest social engagement of the year, something that would never have gotten greenlit if it meant ordering thousands of labels for a product with a hard expiration on relevance.

With the C4000 printing labels in exact quantities, batch by batch, the cost of trying something new dropped from "meaningful financial risk" to "cost of a bag of beans."

That's the real ROI of on-demand labeling, it's not just cost savings; it's the freedom to experiment.

Why does a label quote seem to want you to order 10,000 labels?

Look at the plate fee.

Traditional flexo printing requires physical plates made for your artwork. That’s a fixed upfront cost—whether you print 500 labels or 50,000.

So the fewer labels you order, the more that fee hurts your per-label price.

And plates aren’t the only culprit. Per-color fees, artwork revisions, and custom dies all add fixed costs that reward volume and punish flexibility.

Digital printing removes the plate entirely.

No plate fee.
No setup tied to physical plates.
No need to order thousands just to make the math work.

Your order size should be determined by your business—not by a setup fee.

Six SKUs, one printer, zero pre-printed inventory. Here's how The Coffee Shop actually pulled it off.

Each roast, light, medium, dark, single-origin, decaf, seasonal, has its own label template with shared brand elements (logo, color palette) and variable fields that change per batch:
• Roast date
• Lot number
• Net weight (12oz retail vs. 5lb wholesale bag)
• Origin-specific artwork

Because the C4000 prints in full color on demand, switching from a Kenyan light roast label to a Sumatra dark roast label is a file change, not a re-order, not a warehouse trip, not a minimum order quantity.

The result: The Coffee Shop could run true small-batch production without treating every new roast as a financial risk. If a limited release doesn't sell, they're out a few dozen labels, not a few thousand.

Your first order is about more than price. A small run lets you test your design, material, and customer response before committing to thousands.

Start small. Learn fast. Scale when the data says you're ready.

Day one with the C4000, The Coffee Shop printed exactly 47 labels for their Ethiopian Yirgacheffe.

Not 5,000. Forty-seven. Because that's how many bags they'd roasted that morning.

That's the entire shift in thinking with on-demand label printing: the label run matches the
production run, not the other way around.

Within the first month:
• Zero label waste on any SKU
• No capital sitting in a box of labels for a blend that might get discontinued
• Ability to test a new seasonal roast with 30 labels instead of committing to 5,000

The C4000's compact design meant it lived right next to the bagging station, labels printed and applied in the same motion, no walking labels across the room from a separate print run days earlier.

This is the version of "lean" that actually shows up on a P&L.

No plates, no setup fee to amortize, no minimum forcing your hand.

The per-label price is a little higher, and that's the entire point. You're trading a slightly higher unit cost for the freedom to never freeze your cash, never sit on obsolete stock, and never pay for a run twice.

The cheapest label in the world is the one you actually use. Everything else is just an expensive box. Pay for what moves, not what sits.

The Coffee Shop's owner did the math: over one year, they'd spent more on unused labels than they would on a color label printer.

So, they looked at on-demand printing and landed on the Epson ColorWorks CW-C4000.

Here's why it was the right first move, not just "a" printer:

• Countertop footprint, no need to carve out warehouse space they didn't have
• PrecisionCore TFP printhead at up to 1200 x 1200 dpi, their label art (roast profiles, origin maps, farm photos) actually looked premium, not clip-art
• Entry price point comparable to a thermal-transfer printer, without giving up color

For a shop running under 1,000 bags a day across 6 SKUs, this was the sweet spot: enough capability to make retail-quality labels, without paying for capacity they wouldn't touch for years.
