Rare 18th-century embroideries from the Greek Aegean islands of Skyros, Naxos and Siphnos will feature in Cypria Auctions’ Fine Art sale on 17 June in Nicosia.
 
Representing three distinct regional traditions, these remarkable textiles offer a glimpse into the rich heritage and diverse visual languages of the Aegean. Highlights include this featured vibrant embroidered proskefalada (cushion cover) from Skyros, alongside a rare example of Naxos’s celebrated red embroidery tradition and an exceptionally rare curtain fragment from Siphnos, comparable examples of which are held in the Victoria and Albert Museum, London.
 
Supported by published scholarship and comparative research, the embroideries showcase the artistic sophistication, technical needlework and cultural resonance of Greek island textile traditions.
 
The auction takes place on 17 June at 7.30pm EEST (5.30pm BST).

A deeply expressive work by one of the leading figures of twentieth-century Cypriot art, Mother and child captures a tender moment of intimacy and connection. With its strong sense of form, warm palette and poetic atmosphere, the composition reflects Georghiou’s distinctive artistic language and his enduring engagement with the people, traditions and landscape of Cyprus.

Executed in oil on wood and signed and dated 54 lower left, this work offers a compelling example of Georghiou’s ability to combine personal emotion with a broader cultural vision.

The sale brings together approximately 160 works of Cypriot, Greek and European art, sculpture, rare historical embroideries and important historical artefacts.

Among the highlights are significant works by George Pol. Georgiou, Christoforos Savva, Andreas Charalambides and Yiannis Tsarouchis, alongside a rare copy of the New Testament presented to Ioannis Kapodistrias shortly before his assassination and an exceptional group of 18th-century Aegean embroideries from Skyros, Naxos and Sifnos.
