ARTIST SPOTLIGHT | ANDREAS CHRYSOHOS

Two vibrant compositions by Andreas Chrysohos, an important figure of modern Cypriot art, are currently available for acquisition through Cypria Auctions.

Born in Milia, Famagusta, in 1929, Chrysohos studied painting at Goldsmiths’ College, University of London, and later specialised in the psychology of children’s art. Alongside his artistic practice, he made a significant contribution to art education in Cyprus as a teacher, professor at the Pedagogical Academy and Art Inspector.

His work has been presented internationally, including at the 7th Alexandria Biennale, the 1st India Triennale and the 34th Venice Biennale. Through painting, iconography, calligraphy and art criticism, Chrysohos developed a distinctive artistic language characterised by carefully balanced compositions, geometric structure and a sensitive, expressive use of colour.

THE WORLD OF GREEK SHADOW THEATRE

For generations, the characters of the Greek shadow theatre have occupied a special place in the country's cultural heritage, entertaining audiences while reflecting the humour, traditions and everyday life of Greek society.

This special selection features two original works by Eugenios Spatharis (1924–2009), the legendary artist who devoted his life to preserving and renewing the art of Greek shadow theatre. Depicting Hatziavatis and The Two Kollitiria, these works celebrate some of the tradition's most beloved characters through Spatharis' distinctive artistic style and craftsmanship.

More than works of art, they represent a unique chapter in Greece's cultural history.

Both works are currently available in our Aftersale Collection.

Born in Athens in 1958, Spyros Georgas studied painting at the Academies of Fine Arts in Florence and Bologna. His distinctive artistic language combines vivid colour, expressive figuration and imaginative compositions inspired by memory, travel and symbolism.
