Ntokozo Tshabalala, an Integrated Communication Design student from the Tshwane University of Technology TUT, received a special mention award for his design, called TIE.

The concept is inspired by Kaapse Klopse, the annual festival that usually takes place in Cape Town, where performers wear colourful suits and ties. It also draws from contemporary Gen Z fashion, where shirts, ties, and baggy jeans are often styled together. The wine label is intended as a fashion statement, bringing the tie back into fashion, as it is no longer worn as frequently as it once was.

In creating this label, Ntokozo considered corporate professionals who wear uniforms and suits to work every day, and who simply want to take off their suits, relax, and enjoy a glass of wine.

We’re proud to celebrate Itumeleng Mohlala, an Integrated Communication Design student from the Tshwane University of Technology (TUT), who secured 3rd place in our fourth ROTOCON Wine Label Design Competition with her striking “Boulders” design.

Inspired by the penguins of Boulders Beach in the Western Cape, the concept captures a sense of place and experience through a modern, Bauhaus-influenced aesthetic. A diving penguin symbolises “diving into an ocean of flavour”, bringing a playful yet refined interpretation to the wine experience.

The white wine range — Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, and Chenin Blanc — is expressed through a colour journey inspired by the ocean at different times of day: sunrise, midday, and sunset, reflecting when each wine is best enjoyed.

A fresh, imaginative take on wine label design that connects nature, time, and taste.

The 2nd-place winner of our fourth ROTOCON Wine Label Design Competition was Kara-Mari Gresse, with her design Boerperd.

Inspired by a time before machines, it pays tribute to South African wine heritage—when Boerperd horses worked the vineyards and shaped the land that still produces wine today.

The design features a horse in motion, its form gradually dissolving into softer strokes, suggesting both presence and memory. This transition captures a fleeting moment that feels grounded yet imagined—stillness turning into movement.

Congratulations, Kara-Mari, on this well-deserved achievement and your tribute to the strength, history and enduring spirit of the vineyard.

We’re proud to congratulate Mpilo Mthembu, a talented third-year Integrated Communication Design student from the Tshwane University of Technology TUT, on winning first prize in the fourth ROTOCON Wine Label Design Competition, held in collaboration with TUT, SA Litho Label Printers, and Polyflex Premedia.

Mpilo’s winning design, Die Onderstok (directly translated into Afrikaans from the term ‘rootstock’), draws inspiration from the resilience of the Pinotage grape:

“The wine honours the significance of Pinotage and South Africa’s wine industry… showing that sometimes innovation isn’t about abandoning the old for the new, but crafting new beginnings from strong rootstocks.”
