🌊 2025 Success Story | Coastal Protection at Cairo Water Week 🌊
On October 15, 2025, the Nile Delta Shoreline Stabilization (East of Kitchener Drain) Project joined the session on Coastal Protection during the Cairo Water Week, highlighting the potential of nature-based solutions to protect one of the most vulnerable deltas in the world to climate change.
The session focused on how to build with nature as part of Egypt’s efforts to safeguard the Nile Delta — a region that supports over 50% of the country’s economic activity in agriculture, industry, and fisheries.
Funded by the KfW Bankengruppe, the project studies the feasibility of sand nourishment to combat erosion, flooding, and sea-level rise. Experts shared insights into challenges, best practices, and ways forward to leave no grain of sand behind and to hold the (coastal) line: a basis for action and a political choice!
💡 This initiative reflects Egypt’s commitment to protecting livelihoods, preserving agricultural land, and building climate-resilient coastal communities. By combining innovation, expertise, and international cooperation, we are turning sustainable coastal protection into a reality.
Special thanks go to the Egyptian Ministry of Water Resources and Irrigation (MWRI), represented by the Egyptian Shore Protection Authority (SPA), and the Netherlands for the invite.

On 8 December 2025, members of the NSCE Giza FAIRVILLE Lab joined the FAIRVILLE project team on a field visit to the Waste Management Facility in Fyli, West Attica, Greece. This visit was conducted within the framework of the EU-funded Fairville project.
The visit offered valuable first-hand insight into one of Europe’s largest landfill complexes, spanning over 3,000 hectares and receiving approximately 5,500 tons of waste daily. By connecting research with on-the-ground operational realities, the field trip strengthened our work on environmental inequalities and enhanced cross-lab collaboration and shared learning across the FAIRVILLE consortium.
