Battery electrification is no longer a future concept – it’s the fastest route to reducing greenhouse gas emissions today.
In the Asia Pacific Maritime 2026 Whitepaper “Changing Course: Powering the Future of Vessel Operations”, Jan-Erik Räsänen explains why retrofit programs are essential for accelerating adoption across fleets. “Battery electrification is here to stay, and the focus is currently on new builds, but our belief is that we also need to see a wider adoption for existing vessels,” says Räsänen.

Supporting the next generation…

Foreship's summer internship program is one of our key initiatives to attract and nurture new talent in the field. Each year, students are invited to work alongside our teams, gaining hands-on experience in concept design, feasibility studies, and emerging technologies. Part of the selection process is based on the research candidates are doing into the topics shaping the future of ship design and engineering.

Julius Kuula was one of three Master’s Thesis interns this last year, and in his research paper, “Thermal energy storage in passenger vessels using phase change material”, he investigates how cruise ships can utilize the surplus waste heat generated during sailing.

We’re proud to be part of the visionary transformation of M/S Alfågeln into a modern, fully electric, zero-emission vessel—an initiative led by AxFerries and FinFerries, with design support from our team at Foreship.

With battery technology optimized for short routes, Alfågeln will be able to operate without emissions and with significantly lower noise levels, improving both environmental performance and the passenger experience.

⚓Today, we join the International Maritime Organization - IMO and the global maritime community in celebrating World Maritime Day 2025.

This year’s theme, “Our Ocean, Our Obligation, Our Opportunity”, highlights the ocean’s vital role in the global economy, with over 80% of world trade transported by sea. The ocean is a source of jobs and food for millions of people, a home for countless marine species, and a regulator of the planet's climate, mitigating the impacts of climate change.
As the largest sector operating in the ocean space, shipping has a central role in protecting the marine environment and managing ocean resources responsibly.
We believe that safeguarding the ocean is not just a responsibility — it’s an opportunity to innovate, collaborate, and lead the change toward a more sustainable future.
