Happy 70th to Voltage customer Neil Buchanan.

Neil Buchanan is 70 today! The man who had a generation reaching for the PVA glue and bits of cardboard was also a guitarist in a heavy metal band.

For plenty of us, Neil in his red Art Attack jumper was a familiar part of childhood. He made everything look so easy, although trying it yourself didn’t always produce quite the same result!

Then there were the big outdoor creations. You’d watch him laying out clothes and other everyday objects, wondering where he was going with it, before the camera pulled back to reveal the finished picture. Those were brilliant.

Neil co-created Art Attack and presented its original run from 1990 to 2007. He was also a familiar face on No. 73, Motormouth and Finders Keepers, and played the French artist Smarty Arty in ZZZap!.

Before all that, he helped form the band Marseille in 1976, touring America and performing alongside the likes of Judas Priest, Nazareth and Whitesnake. Quite a different job from showing children what they could make with an empty cereal box!

Years of great children’s television and plenty of inspiration to have a go at making something yourself.

Happy 70th birthday, Neil!
