Exchange For Change has confirmed that drinks producers will pay no producer fees from the launch of the UK’s Deposit Return Scheme in October 2027 until the end of 2028.

Anticipated fees will then rise to:

🔹 2.3p per PET plastic container

The EU Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation now applies, meaning affected businesses must comply with the new requirements.

For businesses supplying packaging or packaged products into the EU immediate priorities may include:

• Establishing their legal role for each product and route to market
• Preparing technical documentation and EU Declarations of Conformity
• Collecting the necessary supplier data and evidence
• Checking food-contact packaging against the new PFAS restrictions
• Addressing gaps in existing compliance processes

With further regulatory requirements being introduced progressively between now and 2030, PPWR should be treated as an ongoing compliance programme, not a deadline that has now passed.

Mandatory collections of flexible plastic packaging in England have been delayed until 2030.

Originally due to begin in 2027 under Simpler Recycling, the requirement has been pushed back by three years amid concerns about the UK’s sorting and reprocessing infrastructure and the availability of viable end markets.

The decision has divided the waste and recycling sector.

While some believe the delay provides much-needed time to develop the capacity required, others warn it could weaken investor confidence and slow progress towards a more circular economy.

For packaging producers, important questions remain about how the revised timetable will interact with packaging EPR, recyclability assessments and future compliance costs.

New deforestation due diligence rules are coming to Great Britain. 🌲

Businesses with an annual turnover above £1 million using commodities such as wood, cocoa, coffee, palm oil, soy, rubber and cattle could face new requirements to trace product origins, collect geolocation data and evidence compliance.

The new regime is expected to be introduced in 2027 and is intended to align closely with the EUDR.
