Today is World First Aid Day, a reminder that a few basic skills can make a world of difference in the minutes before help arrives.

St John Ambulance and the British Red Cross both run short courses, and both have free guidance online at sja.org.uk/first-aid-advice and redcross.org.uk/first-aid. If you've never done one, or it's been a while, today's as good a reason as any to book it.

Our CareAngels are trained in first aid and they refresh that training. It isn't the part of the job that gets talked about, but it is one of the reasons a family can go to work on a Tuesday without spending the whole day wondering.

International Day of Charity is about the people who give of themselves, not the large donations or the names on buildings, but the quiet acts of service that hold a place together.

Most of it happens with no recognition at all, which tends to be how the people doing it prefer it. They weren't looking to be thanked. They saw something that needed doing and they did it.
