This one comes up all the time, and it causes confusion on both sides 🥴

Myth: If your child is ill, you can take sick leave.
Fact: Sick leave is for when the employee is unwell.

If your child becomes suddenly unwell, this usually falls under time off for dependants. It’s designed for unexpected emergencies and is typically unpaid, short-term time to deal with the situation and arrange care. 🤒

(After that, the next step is often annual leave, unpaid leave, or another agreed arrangement - depending on what works for your workplace.)

When managers and employees are working from different assumptions, it can create friction. A quick reminder of the correct category can save a lot of stress, keeping things fair and consistent.

For example: giving someone a heads-up on what a meeting is about and when it’s coming can make a huge difference, especially for people with ADHD. It gives time to process and reduces pressure in the moment.
