"It looked perfect on my screen!"

We hear this one a lot, usually from someone staring at a blurry roller banner at a trade show wondering where it all went wrong.

Here's the myth: if an image looks sharp on your monitor, it'll print sharp too.

The truth: your screen is only showing you 72dpi. That looks crisp on a laptop. Blow it up to 850mm x 2000mm on a roller banner and suddenly your logo has more blocks than a Lego set.

For a roller banner to print sharp at full size, we need your artwork at 150dpi minimum. That's the difference between a banner people admire and one that costs you a reprint.

"Foamex and Dibond are basically the same board, right? They'll both be fine outside."

They look the same. Flat, rigid, ready to go on a wall. Then the British weather has a word.

Foamex is a PVC foam board. It soaks up moisture and starts bowing and degrading outdoors, often within a few months. Great for short-term indoor stuff, but pop it on an exterior wall and it'll be looking sad and warped before the season's out.

Dibond is aluminium composite. It doesn't drink in the damp and it stays flat, which is why it's rated for permanent outdoor installation. Years, not weeks.

So the myth: "Foamex works fine outdoors long-term."

The truth: it doesn't. For anything staying outside, you want Dibond.

If you're not sure which board your job actually needs, ask us before you order. Cheaper than replacing a warped sign come spring.

Funny how a window graphic can look brilliant on the design proof and then basically disappear once it's up on the glass. Three things we see trip people up all the time:

Contrast. Dark text on a tinted window reads fine when you're stood inside. Step out into direct sun and it's gone. Worth testing your colour combo against the actual glass tone before you print anything.

Too much copy, too small. A window isn't a brochure. If it takes more than six words to land your message, that's too many. Passers-by have about two seconds, so make them count.

Wrong film for your light. Perforated one-way film looks lovely from inside but loses opacity in bright summer sun. Full-colour vinyl holds its colour outdoors. Match the film to where your light's coming from.

Best window graphics are the ones people actually read from the pavement. Give us a shout if you want a hand getting yours right.

A quick heads-up on PVC banner specs, because the numbers on the order form don't tell the whole story. 💨

A few things worth knowing before your next outdoor banner goes up for the summer.

GSM is only part of the picture 🏋
440gsm is our outdoor standard, but weight just tells you how thick the material is. It doesn't tell you how well it handles tension or UV. A cheap, heavy vinyl can still bow and stress in a gusty British summer.

Eyelet pitch matters as much as count 🛠
Eyelets every 50cm distribute the load evenly. When fixing points are spaced too far apart, the wind concentrates its force on those few spots, and that's usually where a banner starts to tear. Worth checking the pitch, not just the count.

Hems aren't really optional ✂
A raw-cut edge frays quickly outdoors and lets moisture wick into the print layer. Welded hems seal the material and give your banner a proper chance of lasting the season.

Both are called banners. One belongs outside in the rain. The other belongs at your next exhibition. Do you know which is which?

Use a PVC banner if your sign is going outside, tied to a fence, hoarding, or scaffolding. Printed on 440gsm material with welded hems and eyelets at 50cm pitch. Handles wind, rain, and a full British summer without shredding.

Use a roller banner if you're setting up at an exhibition, trade show, pop-up, or indoor event. Packs into a carry case, sets up in seconds, stands cleanly without fixings. Not built for outdoors. Don't put them there.

Use both if you've got a shopfront and an event presence. PVC handles the exterior, roller works inside or at shows. Different tools, different roles, both worth having.

Know the environment first. The right banner follows from that.
