HISTORY: I may never have had the chance to experience the magnificent Twin Towers in person, but I’m grateful to have these small pieces of their history here at the studio… an Observation Deck ticket from the 1980s for the South Tower of the World Trade Center, accompanied by a pressed penny that would have been purchased in the gift shop on the 107th floor.

Small objects, but remarkable little connections to a place and a moment in time that are now part of history.

NEVER FORGET: For anyone visiting the DSD studio, it’s obvious how much I love the city of New York. Its awe-inspiring architecture, combined with its starring role in classic films such as Ghostbusters and Big, sparked that passion from an early age.

Today, we remember those who lost their lives on September 11th, 2001, following the horrific attacks a quarter of a century ago. We also remember the extraordinary resilience of New York and its people, and remain inspired by the way the city continues to rebuild, both physically and emotionally.

I recently watched a documentary on Netflix, Turning Point: Generation 9/11, which highlighted how, 25 years on, there is now an entire generation born after 9/11. For them, the events of that day are something they have only ever known through history lessons, documentaries and the stories of those who remember them.

As the years pass, 9/11 is gradually becoming history rather than living memory. That makes it all the more important that we continue to remember those who were lost, share their stories and ensure that future generations understand the significance of what happened that day.

PREVENTION: Today is World Su***de Prevention Day, a day to raise awareness, encourage open conversations, and remind everyone that help is available. Sometimes, simply starting a conversation can make a difference. So, if you’re struggling, or you’re worried about someone else, please reach out. You don’t have to face it alone.

DSD is proud to have been a commercial partner of Campaign Against Living Miserably (CALM) for the past six months. CALM provides life-saving services, information, and advice to help anyone struggling with life navigate the issues that can make us feel miserable.

As part of our partnership, each month we donate the equivalent of a call to CALM’s helpline for every new client we work with. In honour of today and the ongoing partnership, I’ve worked up this special CALM Edition of the DSD logo. Loving that fluorescent yellow!

ALWAYS BE CREATING: It doesn’t matter what it is, or who will see it. If you have the ability to make something do it! Couldn’t resist getting Sienna's S18 graphic worked up as physical vinyl stickers 👏🏻

DESIGN PRINCIPLES: There are many principles of a design which can differentiate something from being good or bad. Good design fits our needs so well that these elements become invisible. These basic principles include alignment, repetition, contrast and hierarchy; and are the basis of any successful design ex*****on.

New York brand designer Jacob Cass once said “The worst logo applied well is better than the best logo applied poorly”, perfectly summing up the need for the core principles of design throughout all applications.

STUDIOVERSARY: It’s exactly five years today since my first official day at No. 78 New London Road.

Before the move, I’d sketched up all the various elevations for the space, so things came together pretty quickly over the August Bank Holiday weekend beforehand, back in 2021.

Five years on, and it’s amazing to think how much has happened since those first few days in the studio.
Have a great week, everyone!

CALLS: It’s the last day of August and we have donated to Campaign Against Living Miserably (CALM) via Work For Good to cover a single helpline call, representing Pure Sensation as a new DSD client this month.

I’m so proud to be a commercial partner to CALM, who provide life-saving services, information and advice to help anyone struggling with life navigate the issues that can make us feel miserable. Every month 28,000 calls come into the CALM helpline, meaning that every 59 seconds a request for help is answered.

COMPLETED IT MATE: Yesterday was an emotional one. 25.6 miles covered in 9.5 hours, from Chelmsford to Mersea Island, all in memory of Adam. It started out wet, dried up along the way, and eventually turned into perfect conditions.

Along the route, I had some surprise encounters that really spurred me on; particularly my Aunt at mile 17, who coincidentally happened to be staying in the area this week, and then Adam's brother, Dave, who travelled over 3.5 hours to support me. Safe to say, that was an emotional encounter.

The support from family, friends and clients has been phenomenal. Not only have your kind messages meant so much, but your incredibly generous donations to my chosen charity for the walk, Butterfly Effect WELLbeing CIO, have been amazing too.

As of this morning, we've collectively raised a staggering £775.00, an absolutely phenomenal amount. The page is still open for donations and also shares some of Adam's story, as well as information about the incredible support Butterfly Effect Well Being provides.

Once again, thank you all. This feels like a great way to lead into Su***de Prevention Month in September, continuing to raise awareness, share resources, encourage conversations, and help reduce the stigma surrounding mental health.

TRADEMARK: The client ‘experience’ is key. It is not only the basis for a long lasting business relationship but also the opportunity for them to spread the word about their experience, either good or bad!

Author and brand strategist Jay Danzie sums this up with his quote “How you leave others feeling after having an experience with you becomes your trademark”.

Make your ‘trademark’ the very best it can be and have a great week everyone.
