A quick check today could help avoid any unwanted surprises before you travel.

Many people only look at the expiry date, but if you're travelling to Europe, that's only half the story!

✅ Check #1: When was your passport issued?

If you're travelling to the EU or Schengen Area, your passport must have been issued less than 10 years before the date you arrive.

This is where many travellers get caught out. Some UK passports issued before October 2018 were given extra months when renewed, meaning the expiry date can look fine even though the passport is too old for travel.

👉 Don't just check the expiry date – check the issue date too!

✅ Check #2: Does your passport have enough time left on it?

Different countries have different rules about how much validity you need remaining on your passport.

Some popular examples:

- Spain
- Greece
- Portugal

✔️ Passport must be less than 10 years old when you arrive
✔️ Must have at least 3 months remaining on your passport when you leave

- Turkey

✔️ Passport must have at least 150 days validity remaining when you arrive
✔️ Must have a full blank page for entry and exit stamps

📸 A handy tip: Visitors to Turkey should also carry a form of photo ID with them at all times.

- USA

✔️ Your passport must be valid for the duration of your stay
✔️ You'll also need the correct travel authorisation before you travel, either an ESTA or a visa, depending on your circumstances
