How are pest professionals actually using working dogs?

Last month we asked the sector to tell us about their experiences. Now we’ve published the results.

Among respondents using working dogs:

🐀 88% used them in mammal control or detection
🪳 15% used them for invertebrate detection
🐁 Rats were the most commonly detected mammal
🎓 82% of those using dogs to detect mammals had trained the dogs themselves.

Respondents also described dogs being used for surveying and detection, including identifying whether rabbit burrows are active.

Wasps behaving a little worse for wear?

At this point in the season, worker wasps are leaving their nests and looking for sugary foods.

♻️ Digital Waste Tracking comes into force on 1 October. Do you know what changes first?

The new UK-wide system is designed to improve waste data and make it easier for regulators to identify non-compliance.

The important bit for pest management businesses is that it’s being introduced in phases.

From 1 October 2026, waste receiving sites in England and Wales will need to record and report waste they receive digitally. Waste carriers, brokers and dealers won’t become subject to mandatory digital tracking until October 2027.

And don’t bin the paperwork just yet – existing waste transfer notes and hazardous waste consignment notes will remain in use for the time being.

We’ve put together an overview of what’s changing, when it applies and how the new system will work.
