There's a particular quality to the light at this time of year.
Not the lush, golden kind that comes in September. This is the other sort - low, flat, gone by half four. The kind that tells you winter isn't coming. It's arriving.
I noticed it yesterday morning. The first real see-your-breath day. And my first thought - well, my second thought, the first was about tea - was about the aircraft I know are sitting on lines at airfields up and down the country right now.
Parked up after a summer of flying. Nobody quite thinking yet about what the next four months will ask of them.
The team at Cambrai have been thinking about this for almost 50 years. Which means we've seen a lot of spring annuals. And the pattern that gives me pause isn't the dramatic stuff. It's the quiet, gradual kind. The condensation that built up slowly through a damp winter. The Perspex that got scratched by a cover that didn't quite fit - or no cover at all. The interior that smelled faintly wrong by March and nobody could work out why.
None of it is catastrophic in the moment. All of it costs money, time, and flying days by the time spring comes around.
If the change in the weather and the clocks going back has nudged you into thinking about it - good. We've put together a free Aircraft Care Guide that covers exactly this: what winter does to an aircraft, and what's worth doing about it. No sales pitch. Yours to download or we'll post you a printed copy.
