🎮 Is your gaming laptop running slower than it used to? We might know why! 🔧

We recently had a customer bring a gaming laptop into Ely Computer Centre because it wasn't performing as well as it used to.

We ran a benchmark test using Unigine Superposition and discovered that the laptop was suffering from thermal throttling — getting too hot and reducing its performance to protect itself.

The original benchmark score? Just 1,070.

We gave the laptop a thorough clean, replaced the thermal paste, and ran the benchmark again.

🚀 The new score? 3,370!

That's more than TRIPLE the original performance score, simply by giving the laptop some much-needed maintenance!

Dust build-up and ageing thermal paste can prevent your gaming laptop from cooling properly, leading to reduced performance, excessive fan noise and higher temperatures.

✅ Professional cleaning
✅ Thermal paste replacement
✅ Performance diagnostics
✅ Gaming PC and laptop repairs

Don't put up with a slow, noisy or overheating gaming laptop! Bring it into Ely Computer Centre and let us see if we can get it running at its best again.

As we have built quite a few rigs now, I thought we would share our favourite gaming builds 🖥️✨

There's nothing we love more at Ely Computer Centre than a proper custom build, and we've been busy! Here are a few recent favourites from the workshop:

🔵 The Blue Beast. A dual-chamber showpiece with a liquid-cooled CPU, a monster triple-fan RTX 5090 graphics card and a wall of ice-blue lighting. It looks as good as it performs.

🤍 The Arctic White. A clean, all-white build with an ASUS GeForce RTX 5070 graphics card and white braided cabling. Subtle, sleek and seriously quick.

🌈 The RGB Powerhouse. A Ryzen 7 and GeForce RTX 5070 build in a mesh-front case with rainbow lighting. Great 1440p performance without breaking the bank.

🌸 The Pink Panther. A Ryzen 7 X3D build with an RTX 5060 Ti 16GB graphics card in a rounded pink case. Proof that powerful doesn't have to mean black and boring!

⚪ The Twin Whites. We also had a pair of white builds on the bench, with an Intel Core i7 and RTX 5060 Ti.

Every PC we build is tailored to you: your games, your budget and your style. We choose quality components, build them tidily and test everything before it leaves the shop.

💬 Thinking about a new gaming PC? Pop in, give us a call or message us here to talk through your options. Whether you want something understated or something that lights up the whole room, we'll build it for you.

Following on from my previous post, here is the next article I wrote for the Ely Standard from July:

This month the focus is on one of the fastest-growing scams I see in the shop at the moment doesn't arrive by email or phone call – it appears as a pop-up message on your computer.
The message usually claims that your antivirus protection has expired and urgently needs renewing. It often looks genuine, using familiar logos and alarming wording to make you think your computer is at risk. The scammers are hoping you'll panic and click the message without stopping to think.
These pop-ups are not coming from your antivirus software. Instead, they are browser notifications that have been enabled after accidentally clicking on an advert or visiting a website that tricks you into allowing notifications. Once permission has been given, the scammers can send convincing messages directly to your computer whenever they choose.
If you click one of these pop-ups, you'll usually be taken to a fake website that asks for a small payment to renew your protection. Unfortunately, the small payment isn't what the scammers are interested in. Their real goal is to steal your bank card details. Those details are then often used to make much larger purchases, sometimes before the victim even realises what has happened.
Sadly, many of the people who visit Ely Computer Centre have already been caught out. They often come to us after being advised by their bank, by which time the fraudulent transactions have already taken place.
The good news is that the problem is usually straightforward to fix if it's caught early. We can remove the unwanted browser notifications and make sure they can't keep appearing.
If you're seeing pop-ups telling you that your antivirus has expired, don't click on them. Close the message and bring your computer into the shop. We'd much rather help you prevent a scam than help you recover from one.

As some of you know, I now have a monthly column for the Ely Standard so I thought I would also share my articles here. This is one of my previous articles:

Dear Readers, in this month’s article, let’s look at security on your computer. One of the most common misconceptions I encounter is that having antivirus software installed makes a computer completely safe. While antivirus software is an important layer of protection, it cannot protect against every threat, particularly when the software running on the computer is no longer supported.
As software gets older, security flaws are discovered. When the software is still supported, the manufacturer releases updates to fix these weaknesses. However, once support ends, newly discovered vulnerabilities remain unpatched, creating opportunities for criminals to exploit them.
The most significant example of this at the moment is Windows 10. Microsoft will end support for Windows 10 in October 2025. After that date, security updates will no longer be provided for most users. This means that as new vulnerabilities are discovered, computers running Windows 10 will become increasingly exposed to risks, regardless of how good their antivirus software may be.
Many people are unaware which version of Windows they are using. A quick way to identify Windows 10 is to look at the Start button in the bottom-left corner of the screen. If the Start button appears as four black squares, there is a good chance the computer is running Windows 10 and should be checked.
For many older computers, upgrading to Windows 11 is not possible because they do not meet Microsoft's hardware requirements. In these cases, the safest option is usually to replace the computer with a Windows 11 device rather than continue using an unsupported system.
If you are unsure whether your computer is running Windows 10 or whether it can be upgraded, it is worth seeking advice sooner rather than later.
