Networking is not about how many people you meet. It is about what happens after you meet them.

The most valuable connections are rarely made in one conversation.

They are built over time.

You meet someone at an event. You see them again a few weeks later. You comment on one of their posts. You make an introduction. You recommend them when an opportunity comes up.

Eventually, that familiar face becomes someone you know, trust and perhaps do business with.

That is why networking matters.

It creates relationships that can lead to:

→ New clients and referrals
→ Collaborations and partnerships
→ Advice and shared experience
→ Introductions you would never have made yourself
→ Opportunities that often start with a simple conversation

A few things that can make networking more valuable:

→ Go with the intention of having good conversations, not selling
→ Ask questions and actually listen to the answers
→ Follow up afterwards
→ Introduce people when you see a useful connection
→ Keep showing up

You do not need to leave every event with a new customer.

Sometimes the most important person you meet today becomes the person who recommends you six months from now.

What has networking led to for you that you never expected?

Leadership starts from within and grows outward.
We’re pleased to share an exciting leadership event coming to Scotland next year.

The Calling 2026, organised by the Vardy Foundation, is a new one-day leadership experience designed to inspire, equip and commission people who want to lead well in every area of life and work.

This powerful day will bring together keynote talks, teaching sessions, panel discussions, interviews and creative reflective moments, all centred around three core themes:

→ Lead yourself
→ Lead others
→ Lead change

It’s a space to pause, reflect and strengthen the kind of leadership that creates positive impact in organisations, communities and beyond.

We’re also proud to see Dechomai Ltd supporting the event through business development and helping spread the word.

SWIB members can receive 10% off tickets for The Calling 2026.

It was a pleasure to join Dr Nina Burrowes for a recent webinar discussing what “all reasonable steps” means in practice when it comes to preventing sexual harassment in the workplace.

One of the key messages from our discussion was that employers cannot simply rely on having policies, processes and training in place.

Nina spoke powerfully about the capability of individuals to address inappropriate behaviour and to call it out when they see it. For this to happen, organisations need to create a culture where people feel able to speak up—and where inappropriate behaviour is not minimised, ignored or normalised.

A risk assessment or audit can be an important starting point, but it is unlikely to be sufficient on its own. Employers need to keep reviewing and evolving what they do, learning from incidents, feedback and changes within their workplace.

Preventing sexual harassment is not a one-off compliance exercise. It requires continuous attention.

The real question for employers is not simply: “Do we have the right policies in place?”

It is: “What is our culture telling people about what is—and isn’t—acceptable here?”

Thank you to Nina for such an insightful discussion and to everyone who joined us.
