This month, we're shining the spotlight on committee member Amanda Burns, Head of Business Development and Senior Account Lead at Flourish Marketing. With over 14 years of experience spanning agency, in-house and public sector marketing, Amanda is passionate about bringing people together, building meaningful relationships and helping organisations grow.

It's that same passion for connection and collaboration that drives her involvement with SWIB. For Amanda, being part of the committee is an opportunity to champion women in business, create opportunities, share experiences and give something back to a community of ambitious, inspiring women.

And giving back doesn't stop there! Alongside a busy career and being a working mum, Amanda runs a book club for her peers in marketing and creative Industries and volunteers as treasurer for a local children's charity.

When she's not juggling deadlines, family life and volunteering, you'll likely find her enjoying a good historical novel, a cappuccino, a trip to the seaside or a well-earned early night!

Following this year’s SWIB Awards, we wanted to continue shining a light on some of our winners and the work they are doing beyond the awards themselves.

Our Champion of Women winner, Julie Morrison, Founder and CEO of Baby Loss Retreat, is hosting Rise & Connect on Thursday 25 February 2027 at the Kimpton Blythswood Hotel in Glasgow.

The afternoon will bring together local businesses and professionals for connection, conversation and some valuable time away from the usual demands of working life. Alongside opportunities to meet new people, the event will include a focus on wellbeing through Reiki and guided breathing exercises.

Guests will also hear more about the work of Baby Loss Retreat and the support the charity provides to parents and families experiencing the devastating impact of baby loss.

Arrival is from 12.15pm, followed by a two course lunch and the afternoon programme, finishing at approximately 2.30pm.

It is lovely to see Julie continuing to create opportunities that bring together business, wellbeing and a cause that means so much to her.

Our October Multi Club Virtual Networking event takes place tomorrow from 10am until 11am, bringing together women from a brilliant mix of business communities across Scotland.

This month’s event brings together Scottish Women in Business, Self Made Female, The Glow Club, Lomond Business Network, Dechomai, The Wave Collective, Behind the Business, Connections & Growth Networking Club and the Scottish Asian Women Business Association.

It is a great opportunity to meet women outside your usual network, introduce your business, make new connections and see where those conversations might lead.

AI is no longer something businesses can treat as a future issue.
New research from Deloitte UK, published this month and based on 25,000 workers, found that 63% of UK working adults knowingly use generative AI for work - almost a quarter now use it every day.

The more interesting finding might be what is happening behind the scenes. Nearly a third of people using generative AI at work said they were doing so without their employer knowing, while around half said they had received no formal training on how to use AI safely and effectively.

That creates a very different challenge for business owners and leaders.

The question is no longer simply whether your business should use AI. Your employees, suppliers or wider team may already be using it to research, write emails, summarise information or complete everyday tasks.

The bigger questions are whether people understand what information they should and should not put into these tools, whether they are checking the accuracy of what comes back, and whether your business has clear expectations around responsible use.

There is a positive side too. Workers in the Deloitte research estimated that AI was saving them an average of 70 minutes each week. Used well, these tools can give people time back for the work that needs judgement, experience, creativity and human interaction.

Perhaps 2026 is the year businesses need to move beyond asking, “Should we use AI?” and start asking, “How are we going to use it well?”

Our first Pals & Partners event with the Association of Scottish Businesswomen is coming up on 21 October from 10am to 11.30am.

The event will bring women from both communities together, create space for useful conversations and give everyone the opportunity to make connections that can continue beyond the session itself.
