Looking back at three years of the Wee Bursary - and looking ahead.

As part of Challenge Poverty Week, we recently joined partners and supporters to mark the third anniversary of the Wee Bursary - an opportunity to reflect on the difference the programme has made and look ahead to how we can build on that impact.

Since launching in October 2023, the Wee Bursary has supported more than 1,000 young people aged 11–25 across Glasgow, helping to remove financial barriers to education and employment.

We heard about the real difference this support can make, including the story of a young person from St Mungo’s Academy who received a bursary towards a laptop. Having access to that laptop enabled her to carry out research, develop her personal statement over the summer, and apply to university to study law - opportunities that may otherwise not have been possible.

It’s a powerful example of how targeted investment can remove a barrier at exactly the right time and help change the trajectory of a young person’s journey.

As we look ahead, there is an opportunity to build on the programme’s success and for Glasgow’s businesses, funders, and organisations to get involved.

Investment, collaboration, and partnership can help ensure more young people have access to the practical support they need to progress into education, employment, and future opportunities.

This Challenge Poverty Week, we’re celebrating three years of impact - and looking ahead to what we can achieve together.

📢 As part of Challenge Poverty Week, we're supporting our colleagues at Glasgow Futures in highlighting the impact of the Wee Bursary and inviting businesses, funders and partners to a special event taking place tomorrow.

The Wee Bursary helps young people overcome emergency and unexpected financial barriers that can impact their ability to access employment, education and training, while connecting them to wider support services.

The lunchtime event at Wheatley House marks the significant milestone of 1,000 young people supported and offers businesses, funders and partners an opportunity to learn more about the programme's impact and explore how they can get involved.

This event is about more than business. It's about building confidence, sharing knowledge, and empowering women to turn their ambitions into reality.

🚀 Scottish Start-Up Month: Derek’s start-up story

This month, we’re celebrating the people taking the leap to start their own business -including Glasgow-based painter and decorator Derek Maclean.

Derek launched his specialist painting, decorating and interior design business in June 2026, with support from Business Glasgow.

Through one-to-one support, Derek developed his business plan, carried out market research and successfully secured a £500 Business Start-Up Grant, helping him purchase essential equipment and invest in local marketing.

His story is a great example of how the right advice and support can help turn a business idea into reality.

Makerteers is a fully funded 6-month programme, running from September 2026 to March 2027, designed to help makers build stronger businesses and make more, together.
