When people see a dry stone wall, they see a boundary.

What if planners, developers and ecologists saw an environmental asset?

Following some interesting conversations around Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG), planning and the environmental value of dry stone walls, we’re exploring a new direction alongside our traditional walling work.

For centuries, dry stone walls have shaped our landscapes. They provide boundaries, retain land and contribute to local character.

But they may also offer much more.

Many walls provide habitat for wildlife, support biodiversity, act as landscape corridors and form part of our historic environment. Yet on development and infrastructure projects, they are often considered only as structures rather than environmental assets.

We’re currently looking at how our practical knowledge of dry stone walls could be used to help developers, planners, ecologists, utilities and infrastructure providers better understand the value of these features before decisions are made about their removal, retention, relocation or restoration.

The aim is simple:

To help ensure that dry stone walls are properly considered not only for their construction value, but also for their environmental, heritage and landscape significance.

This is an area we are actively researching and developing, and we’d be particularly interested to hear from ecologists, planners, landscape architects and developers.

Dry stone walls are often one of the last things considered on a development site.

Yet they can represent significant costs, planning constraints, heritage value and important landscape features.

As experienced dry stone wallers with 25 years experience , we have seen projects where the true extent of wall repairs, rebuilding requirements and associated costs only become apparent once planning has been approved or construction is underway.

This raises a question:

Would developers, planners, land agents and landscape architects benefit from specialist dry stone wall condition surveys at the pre-planning stage?

A survey could identify:

✔ Existing wall condition

✔ Repair and rebuilding requirements

✔ Retention opportunities

✔ Likely budget costs

✔ Planning and landscape considerations

My aim is to understand whether there is a need for this type of specialist input earlier in the development process.
