You probably have a budget.
But do you actually believe it?
If it’s last year’s numbers with 5% added, I’d argue you don’t really have a budget. You have a spreadsheet.
The bit I see businesses miss all the time is the thinking behind the numbers.
What are you assuming about sales?
What are you assuming about margin?
What are you assuming about overheads?
Because if you don’t write those assumptions down, when the numbers start to drift you won’t know why.
In my latest video, I talk through how I think about budgeting, why it’s really just informed guessing, and how to build a financial plan you can actually use to run your business.
Your budget shouldn’t be something finance produces and you look at once a year.
You should know what sits behind it.
And you should own it.
