Today is Autistic Pride Day 💜

It can offer more control than traditional services, without the responsibility of managing a Direct Payment yourself.

🤔 Did you know there are different types of Individual Support Funds (ISFs)?

An ISF is designed to give people more choice and control over how their support is arranged, but not all ISFs work in exactly the same way.

🔹 Traditional ISF – Funding is held by a provider on your behalf, and you decide how it is used to meet your agreed outcomes and support needs.

🔹 Third-Party ISF – An independent organisation manages the funding, helping to coordinate support while keeping you at the centre of decision making.

🔹 Micro Provider or Community-Based ISF – Funding can be used more creatively to access support from small local providers, community groups, activities, and opportunities that matter to you.

The key thing all ISFs have in common is that they are built around the individual, their goals, their choices, and the life they want to live.

The Speakup Project Working Group has been a really important part of this Sheffield University project by Equald from the very beginning.

Made up of self advocates with mild to moderate learning disabilities, with or without autism, the group has helped shape the project throughout, from development ideas right through to co-producing the project logo 👏

The researchers meet with the group every two months as part of the project’s strong co-production approach.

Individual Support Funds (ISFs) can sound complicated at first, but really, they’re all about giving people more choice and control over their support 💙

An ISF is a way of managing an agreed care budget, where the funding is held by a trusted provider on behalf of the individual. Instead of services being chosen for someone, the person receiving support is involved in deciding what support they need, who provides it, and how it works best for their life.

The process usually starts with an assessment through the Local Authority or NHS, where a care and support plan is created. Once funding is agreed, an ISF provider works alongside the individual (and often their family or support network) to put that plan into action in a flexible, person centred way.

The aim is simple, to help people live more independently, make meaningful choices, and receive support that truly works for them 🌿

Every person is different, and ISFs allow support to be shaped around the individual, not the other way around.
