You’d be forgiven for not realising the summer solstice falls this weekend, what with the grey skies, drizzle and the general lack of anything that feels remotely like summer lately.

But apparently it does, so if you’re thinking about making the most of the longer evening, getting the firepit lit and having one or two out the back, today’s a good day to get yourself sorted.

Why birch is a great shout for summer fires 🔥

Birch is one of those woods that’s very handy to have about, especially when you’re lighting the firepit or wanting a good flame without waiting half the evening for things to get going.

It catches quickly, burns bright, and gives you that lovely lively flame that makes a fire feel like a fire, if you know what I mean.

That makes it a great option for summer evenings, BBQ nights, firepits, chimineas, and those cooler nights when you still want a bit of heat outside without making a full operation out of it.

Now we’re talking ☀️🔥

That wee bit of sunshine over the long weekend was long overdue, wasn’t it?

You’d nearly feel the country lifting a bit. A few cold ones cracked open, the garden chairs dragged out, and hopefully a firepit or two getting lit once the evening cooled down.

Grilling season… or is it? 👀😅

You’d nearly think we’re safe to start talking about BBQs and firepits, then the sky goes dark and reminds us where we live.

A wee Tuesday tip from me to help keep your kiln dried logs in tip top shape 🔥

Once your firewood’s home, it’s worth taking two minutes to store it right.

Keep it up off the ground, keep a bit of cover over it, and let some air move round it if you can. It doesn’t need to be anything fancy, but it helps keep the wood in good nick and ready to burn the way it should.

There’s nothing worse than going to light the stove and realising the wood’s been left sitting where all the damp can get at it.

A small bit of care now makes life a lot easier when you want the fire on and the house cosy.

A good all-rounder for the fire 🔥

If you’re looking for a wood that covers a lot of bases, ash is a very solid shout.

It’s one of those logs that regular users tend to come back to again and again. A denser wood, burning clean and hot, with a bright lively flame and a longer burn than alder or birch once it gets going.

So while it can be a wee bit slower to light at the start, it more than makes up for it once the fire settles in.

Ash is a great option for:
🔥 Home fires
🔥 Wood-fired and multi-fuel stoves
🔥 Fireplaces
🔥 Even the BBQ

Ours is cut to around 24–25cm and kiln dried to less than 20% moisture, so it’s ready to burn properly from the minute it lands.

If you want something dependable, economical, and easy to keep going with, ash is hard to go wrong with.
