Meta has announced a change that advertisers should be aware of - if you advertise on Facebook or Instagram read on!
From 1 July 2026, Meta will begin applying location-based fees to ads delivered in certain countries to cover Digital Services Taxes (DST) and other regulatory costs.
What does this mean in practice?
These fees are based on where your ads are shown (your audience location) – not where your business is based. They will be added after ads are delivered, rather than being included within your campaign budget.
Current location fees include:
• Austria – 5%
• France – 3%
• Italy – 3%
• Spain – 3%
• Turkey – 5%
• United Kingdom – 2%
For example:
If you run £100 of ads targeting the UK, an additional £2 location fee would be added, bringing the total to £102 (plus any applicable VAT).
A few key points for advertisers:
✔ The fee applies to all ad formats (image, video etc.)
✔ It also applies to WhatsApp click-to-message campaigns and marketing messages invoiced with ads
✔ It will appear itemised by jurisdiction for transparency
✔ Your campaign budget will not automatically include this fee
Meta says this change reflects the evolving regulatory environment, and other major digital platforms may adopt similar approaches.
👉 If you’re managing paid social campaigns, you need to factor these additional costs into your planning and ROI reporting.
