The most interesting engineering conversations rarely have simple answers.

That has certainly been true of my recent Future Engineering Bets episodes with Richard Hopkins, Mark Grain and Honda Europe’s Patrick Keating.

Across the three conversations, we’ve explored why great engineering ideas struggle to reach the market, how motorsport can prove hydrogen technology under pressure, and whether EV policy reflects the realities facing manufacturers and consumers.

So, who should I speak to next?

If you know someone working in automotive, electrification, hydrogen, energy transition, defence, aerospace or advanced engineering - who has a perspective to share - tag them below 👇

Swipe right for commercialisation?!

Turning world-class research into commercial reality is, unfortunately, rarely straightforward.

That's what former F1 Team Head of Operations Richard Hopkins & P-ONE are trying to change.

Instead of matching people, they're matching university innovation with the industry problems it can actually solve.

What can Formula One teach universities, OEMs and investors about moving faster?

Quite a lot, according to my recent guest Richard Hopkins.

With experience across Brabham, McLaren and Red Bull, Richard brings a Formula One perspective to one of the most underappreciated challenges in advanced engineering: turning great ideas into commercial reality before the opportunity moves on.

If you’re interested in engineering, innovation or turning great ideas into commercial reality, this one is worth a listen (We also go into some of the very practical use cases of autonomous driving... 🍺)

Should Sainsbury’s be told that 50% of its sales must be apples? Probably not.

For Patrick Keating of Honda Europe, the same principle applies to automotive.

Governments can set clear emissions targets, but manufacturers need the freedom to develop technologies that reflect how people actually live and travel.

What does Honda Europe really think about the road to 2035?

For many automotive companies, it's becoming an increasingly uncomfortable journey.

I speak with Patrick Keating of Honda Europe about the pressure facing the automotive industry, the future of the UK’s ZEV mandate, and why rigid targets risk losing sight of the people expected to follow them

From charging inequality and pay-per-mile taxation to hybrids, customer choice and the dangers of prescribing a single technology, this conversation goes well beyond the usual EV debate.

The McMurtry Spéirling car can generate around two tonnes of downforce - enough to stick itself to a ceiling.

The implications of this active fan technology beyond motorsport are massive.

Life-saving, even.

This might be one of the most overlooked issues in the transition to EV.

EVs are being rewarded for having zero tailpipe emissions, but far less attention is being paid to weight, material use, road wear and whether the vehicle itself is proportionate.

That raises a bigger question: are we regulating the right things?

I cover this and more in the latest episode of Future Engineering Bets.

Boards rarely need more information.

What they need is a clearer understanding of the risks, the bets being made, and the trade-offs behind them.

Engineering decisions shape delivery, scalability, cost, and risk. The role of reporting is to help decision-makers understand those implications, rather than simply document what has happened since the last meeting.

I've sat in plenty of discussions where activities were reported in detail, but the decisions that actually mattered remained unclear.

A useful board report should explain where the organisation is heading, what might get in the way, and what choices are being made along the journey.

If your board packs are getting longer but the conversations aren't getting better, let's talk 7Q.

Could you be the next guest on Future Engineering Bets?

When I launched Future Engineering Bets, I knew I wanted to create space for serious conversations about advanced engineering, innovation and where capital should be placed next.

What I didn’t expect was just how many brilliant conversations it would lead to in such a short space of time.

So far, I’ve had the pleasure of speaking with guests including Mark Preston, Daniel Fung, Iain Wight and Mark Grain, covering everything from motorsport and energy management to industrial strategy, battery technology, hydrogen and the future of mobility.

And we’re only just getting started, with more exciting conversations on the way from guests with experience inside Honda and Formula 1 👀

Now, I’m looking for more people to join me!

If you’re working in automotive, motorsport, electrification, hydrogen, energy transition, defence, aerospace or advanced engineering, and you have a perspective worth sharing, I’d love to hear from you.
