Yesterday, it was wonderful to be back at London Learning Consortium, meeting a new cohort of young people who are not in education, employment or training (NEET).

To say we were impressed would be an understatement. Their enthusiasm, engagement with our business volunteers and eagerness to learn were truly exemplary.

What was particularly inspiring was seeing their confidence grow throughout the session. Each participant rated their confidence from 1–10 at the beginning and end, with every individual increasing their score by at least two points.

A huge thank you to our fantastic business volunteers for sharing their time, experience and insights:

Louis Garner from Wates Group, Gregg Shortt from Home Office (and pictured from left to right) Mikala Ayres HR Consultant, Nathaniel Kerr from Rubra Marketing, Eric Mugambe from HDR and Fiona Murton-Taylor from Croydon Commitment.

It was a real pleasure to see such a positive and ambitious group of young people taking steps towards their future.

Giving unwanted items a new lease of life in Croydon

We often get asked by our business partners whether we can make use of items they no longer need - from furniture and catering equipment to IT equipment, duvets and bedding, pot plants and even Christmas decorations.

More often than not, we can find them a new home.

Sometimes it works the other way too: community groups and non-profit organisations get in touch to see if we can help source something they need. It’s a simple but effective way of connecting local businesses with organisations in our community, giving unwanted items a second life and helping to keep them out of landfill.

This time, a big thank you to PK Partnership, who kindly donated document scanners. We were able to find new homes for them, including one donated to Lives Not Knives a youth-led charity dedicated to preventing knife crime, serious youth violence and anti-social behaviour.

Lives No Knives takes a holistic approach to creating positive change; engaging, educating and empowering young people while supporting their emotional, mental and physical wellbeing.

It’s a great example of what can happen when local businesses and community organisations work together. What might be surplus to one organisation’s needs can be incredibly useful to another.

If your business has items you’re looking to get rid of, or you’re a local community/non-profit organisation looking for something, get in touch. You never know where a simple donation might end up making a difference.

Supporting local businesses to make a difference.

At Croydon Commitment, we connect local businesses with the voluntary and community organisations doing vital work across our borough.

As part of this, we’re delighted to help FSB Insurance Service publicise its fundraising for CAYSH its chosen charity for 2026.

CAYSH supports young people facing homelessness in Croydon and across South London, providing safe accommodation, practical support and help towards a more independent future.

On Friday 4 September, a team from FSB Insurance Service will take part in The CAYSH Cup, a five-a-side football tournament raising money for CAYSH.

Helping businesses put their social value commitments into action, connecting them with local causes and sharing the positive impact they create is at the heart of what we do.

So, if you’re part of the Croydon business community, please consider supporting FSB by donating or sharing their fundraising page with your network:

Every share helps connect this great cause with more local people and businesses.

Today, we were delighted to work with Jackie Jansen and the team at Hilton London Croydon who kindly organised a tour of their Croydon site for Croydon Vision as part of our programme.

The visit gave our participants a fantastic opportunity to explore the wide range of careers available within the hospitality industry, including roles across hospitality, maintenance, food and beverage, spa and gym services.

Our Croydon Vision participants were engaged throughout the visit and gained valuable insight into the different career paths, roles and benefits available within the hotel industry.

We were impressed by the warmth, knowledge and enthusiasm of the Hilton team, and grateful to everyone who took the time to make the visit such an informative and enjoyable experience.

Thank you to Hilton Hotels for supporting our participants and helping to open their eyes to new career possibilities. Partnerships like this can make a big difference in helping people understand the opportunities available to them and take their next steps towards employment.

Croydon has one of the highest numbers of young people aged 16-24 who aren’t in education, employment or training (NEET) in the UK.

This isn’t just a statistic, it’s a long-term challenge because being NEET is closely linked to poorer mental and physical health, as well as reduced lifetime earnings and opportunities.

At Croydon Commitment, through our Ways2Work programme, we’re partnering with local businesses to help change that and we would love to do more!

To keep reaching those who need us most, we’re looking for:
- Funding partners to help us scale our impact
- Volunteers who can share their time, skills, and experience

Whether you can contribute £5,000 or £500, offer 20 volunteering hours a month or just one, your support can make a real difference.

If you’d like to be part of this, we'd love to hear from you: [email protected]
