What's your decision making archetype?
and more importantly, how do you make decisions when you're regulated vs reactive?

From all the research I have done, and experience seeing this in the real world, I can see 4 major archetypes for decision making.

The Driver - they make things happen, they turn vision into action. They are unstoppable... but when they move into a reactive state they turn into a firefighter, confusing motion with progress, and solving problems to self soothe.

The Intellectual brings genuine depth to topics most people just skim the surface of. They connect the dots others miss, and have the highest standards... but in a reactive state preparation becomes avoidance, learning a substitute for doing.

The Anchor is the person that others orientate around and gravitate towards, their presence makes people around them feel genuinely safe and they give from genuine abundance... but in a reactive state that giving becomes people pleasing and resentment follows.

The Visionary sees what is possible before everyone else, and leads the way for everyone else. They are always ahead of the curve, people come to them for new ways of looking at their problems... but in a reactive state the ideas come quicker than the implementation and projects get started but never completed.

Of course everyone will have a mix of these, but everyone also has a dominant pattern.

Which felt most like you?

I have asked this question of 2 clients on different occasions.

Both times there was someone they knew who made them feel a certain way, who was stopping them from showing up.

Whether that was stopping them from attending events so they didn't run into that person in real life, or not showing up online because of how that person made them feel.

In both situations, the space this person was taking, rent free, in their head, was costing my clients money in lost sales, unchased sales, missed opportunities.

So I painted them a picture;

You're at the airport with your family. You've driven an hour or so in that brisk cold early morning air to get there, you've checked in, you've had a fun breakfast. Everyone is really excited about the week you're about to have.

Passports in hand, you start walking down that long corridor to the plane.

Then you see this person at the end, they're stood right in front of the plane door.

Not YOU! No YOU can't come on this plane, they're saying.

Your kids look at you - what's going on Mummy? Why can't we board the plane?

Are you going to let this person stop your family from having an incredible experience?
Are you going to let them stand between you and those core memories you will make with them?

Of course you wouldn't - you'd go all Mama Bear on them and hold your own. You'd march onto that plane with your kids despite them because you know you deserve to be there and you deserve to have these experiences.

So why are you letting them stand in your way earlier in the process?

Why are you letting them stop you from making the money you'll need to BOOK that holiday?

If your strategy relies on everything going to plan...

It's pointless.

Life happens. S**t happens.

We cannot rely on everything going our way, on no hurdles emerging and on feeling our "best selves" every damn day.

Neither can we give up because life is lifing and it all got a bit hard.

Or you can, but you can't complain about the results you didn't get from the work you didn't do.

The right way forward?

Learn how to make decisions under pressure.

Understand how to navigate from underneath the inevitable pressure stack.

You'll get much further in life and in business if you build plans that actually work for you, instead of making you feel like you're failing because you weren't able to live a perfect mess free charmed life 24/7

We all KNOW deep down about Instagram vs reality - how what we see is just a glimpse into someone's day, not their full story.

How we shouldn't compare our every day to their highlights reel.

But, what about how it eats away at our actual enjoyment of moments.

I have said all of these things whilst I should be enjoying every second of the experience I was having.

Instead of soaking up the sunshine, I was worrying about my double chins.
Instead of feeling the music all the way through to my soul, I was trying to get the best picture or video to prove I was there.
Instead of snapping care free memories, I was curating picture perfect moments.

So I quit.

Sure I still make time to grab some photos and if it's work related I will find time to get the "right" shots.

But mostly I am enjoying the freedom of living my life unobserved.

Going out for dinner without putting it on my stories.
Having hysterical conversations knowing it won't be captured and shared.
Listening to a speaker without arranging my facial features.

How has running a personal brand got in the way of your fun?
And do you refuse to let it keep stealing that joy?

This blew my mind when I discovered it.

"In some families, you grow up with the expectation that it's OK to ask for anything at all, but you gotta realise you might get no for an answer. This is Ask Culture.

In Guess Culture, you avoid putting a request into words unless you're pretty sure the answer will be yes. Guess Culture depends on a tight net of shared expectations. A key skill is putting out delicate feelers. If you do this with enough subtlety, you won't even have to make the request directly; you'll get an offer."

I've never considered (until I read this) how accurate this delineation is - when an Asker asks something of a Guesser, the Guesser feels uncomfortable and has the excruciating pain of having to find a way to say no. Because they take the question with the weight of expectation they would have put on it. Whereas for the Asker, getting a no is a 50/50 chance and they don't take said no badly.

Are you an asker or a guesser?
Have you seen this before?

Smart people don't often get caught out by obvious acts of self sabotage.

For them, it's the sophisticated ways that our brains convert our fear into VERY reasonable sounding logic for why we shouldn't take an action.

I'm not procrastinating, I'm taking my time to get it right.
I'm protecting my energy so that I don't burn out (again)
This qualification gives me more authority because it's so recognised.

Is there truth there? Yes
Does that stop them being acts of self sabotage? No

When I onboard a new client, there are a few rules that we put in place.

Specifically they are told:

- Don't lie to me. I can't help you journey from A to B if you're actually starting at C

- Do not ever filter. You cannot offend me. We'll navigate the politically correct response after you have had a human response. I do not judge you based on your first reaction. I would judge you if you wouldn't vary your second.

- Sometimes you just have to get it off your chest. I am here for you to do that. Vent away. It stays between us.

With my employed clients, it is often the first time they have ever had dedicated space to talk about themselves and have someone with no ulterior motive helping them.

You're setting the bar so high you can never reach it.

And then beating yourself up for always failing.

It's a catch 22 that you can never win.
