Building a business rooted in culture requires more than just a strong idea.

It requires clarity in who you are, confidence in your story, and the intention to build something that stays true to both.

For Bolupe Adebiyi, founder of The Mores Village, that has meant creating a space where African heritage is shared with depth, not simplified for convenience.

Her advice reflects that approach: be authentic, start before you feel ready, and build with intention from the beginning.

It’s a reminder that the strongest businesses aren’t built by fitting in. They’re built by staying grounded in what makes your perspective different.

You will never feel fully prepared to start a business.

And that is okay.

If you have a strong idea or a product you believe in, start anyway.

Do a little bit each day. Momentum builds faster than you think.

Not every business starts with a new idea.

Some start with a question.

For Sally El-Arifi, it was simple:
why are we wasting so much food?

That question led to building Laffe Goods, a brand focused on turning overlooked ingredients into something valuable.

Her advice reflects that journey. Trust yourself, build the right connections, and start with what you have. Because most of the time, progress doesn’t come from having everything figured out, it comes from taking the first step.

What does it mean to build a business rooted in culture, not just commerce?

For Bolupe Adebiyi, founder of The Mores Village, it meant creating a space where African heritage is not simplified or reduced, but explored with depth, context and care.

After years working across design, manufacturing and retail, she saw how often African brands were positioned as “niche”, their stories overlooked rather than understood.

So she built something different.

A platform that brings together creators and audiences, where culture is experienced, not just consumed.

Her journey highlights something we see often when speaking to women founders: building with intention requires more than a good idea. It requires clarity, patience, and the willingness to challenge how things have always been done.

We’re incredibly grateful to Bolupe for sharing her perspective as part of our Women in Business series.

If you’re interested in female founders, purpose-led businesses, and building with cultural integrity, her story is well worth exploring.
