Why scammers love encrypted messaging apps and how to spot the warning signs
From our experience at Wealth Recovery Solicitors, scammers are increasingly using encrypted apps like Telegram and WhatsApp to run sophisticated crypto and investment frauds. These platforms, designed for privacy, now offer scammers the same protections as legitimate users.
Why scammers love these apps:
- End-to-end encryption makes monitoring difficult.
- Easy anonymity with disposable numbers.
- Bots and groups push fake “tips” and profits.
- Global reach means overseas scammers target UK victims with little risk.
Red flags to watch for:
- Asked to switch to Telegram/WhatsApp for “privacy”.
- Promises of guaranteed returns or urgent “limited-time” offers.
- Pressure to download unknown trading apps or send crypto to private wallets.
- Avoids video calls, credentials can’t be verified, screenshots look perfect.
If you think you’ve been scammed:
- Preserve all evidence (chat history, wallet addresses, screenshots).
- Don’t delete accounts or keep chatting.
Stay alert: if it sounds too good to be true, it almost certainly is.
