Meaning 'friend of the people', AARVEN is an ethical homeware and jewellery brand based in Margate.

Sustainability and ethical production is at the heart of what we do. At AARVEN we produce all of our collections in collaboration with small-scale artisan groups. Elevating their craft and providing access to the international market. The nature of the global supply chain means our decisions as consumers affect people all around the world. At AARVEN we strive to create products which bring as much joy to their creator as they do to the end customer through sustainable and ethical production. Founded by two friends, craft development expert, Bee Friedmann and designer, Amy Fleuriot-Reade who met whilst walking their dogs Hiro and Wolf in London in London in 2011. The pair quickly discovered a common love for design, animals, and sustainability and set off together on a 6 week adventure to East Africa. It was this trip that provided the inspiration to start AARVEN (formerly Artisans & Adventurers). The brand now works in close collaboration with over 30 artisans across Africa and in India.

Meeting our basket weaving group was an exhilarating experience. A 2.5hour ride from Nairobi on motorbike, out of the busy city and around thrilling hairpin bends through the mountains to the small market town of Kitangi.
We were greeted by Mulli who co-ordinates a group of 50 women to weave designs for many international brands including AARVEN.
It was such a peaceful experience to sit and watch the women weave under trees swathed with passion vines. After enjoying fresh chapatis and chai for lunch we made our way back feeling inspired and full of ideas for our next basket collection.
Dom was so happy he even did a dance!

Meet our Kenyan artisans 🇰🇪 I’ve had the most inspiring two weeks reconnecting with old friends and making new ones. Travelling north to Kisii and around Nairobi, discovering new handcrafts and exploring lush forests, arid plains and incredible homes.
I’m so excited about the new collections we’ve been working on and can’t wait to be back in this beautiful country again. Thank you Kenya, you’ve refreshed my mind and reignited my passion for everything we do.

A night in Nani's Wonderland 🐉

Our Kenya adventure began somewhere truly magical - Kitengela Glass, just outside Nairobi, where we stayed in a mosaic glass house in the garden Nani Croze has been creating for decades.

Stained-glass windows, an infinity pool guarded by three dragons, a sauna built entirely from glass bottles, monkeys wandering the mosaic terraces, and more hand-blown glass than you could take in across several days. On my last morning I even tried glassblowing myself, four years of training to master the craft and I have so much more appreciation for it now.

Staying at the awe inspiring Kitengele Glass, visiting our jewellery makers, wood carvers and weavers in Nairobi before driving a full day through arid plains into lush mountain terrain to visit our soapstone carvers in Kisii.

Kenya here we come! 🇰🇪✈️
It’s been 7 years since I last visited the country where it all began. I cannot wait to see our artisans, all dear friends, many of whom we’ve been working with for over a decade. I’ll visit our carvers, jewellers, weavers and hopefully make some new connections and creative discoveries along the way! First stop Nairobi… Stay tuned on our stories to follow along with our Kenyan adventures.
