One of the most influential instrumentals of the last century.
The 1977 groundbreaking jazz-funk track "Space Funk" by Manzel that was sampled by long list of artists utilising the dynamic blending of the incessant drum, keyboards rhythms, aerial horns they adopted to enhance their own.
Making Shad O'Shea's & Manzel Bush lavish creation one of the most sought 45s for those crate-diggers seeking superior instrumentation to isolate drum solos, percussion loops, "Space Funk" supplies all that and more.
Notably Childish Gambino's "II. Shadows" in 2013, before that Eric B. & Rakim's "No Competition" in 1988 just two of the many that benefitted from lending from this brilliantly constructed instrumental.

Brit-made old-school Northern Soul.
Chris Farlowe had the most authentic "black" vocal of all the British R&B styled recording artists, all the time he spent with his group "The Thunderbirds" most press reviewers were all convince the brutal lead came from a negro. But Islington born John Henry Deighton was a white guy who naturally emitted the soul sound. His version of Darrell Banks' "Open The Door To Your Heart" on his 1966 "The Art Of" Chris Farlowe album I still adore today.
A B-side created by label Immediate label founder Andrew Loog Oldham. Albeit maybe by accident, is a note for note thumping stomper. A record that epitomises the Northern Soul sound. There is no USA 45 release, leaving the ultimate way for ownership is this gorgeously decorated and stupidly RARE red and white .
Listen as the fat bass guitar intro collides with Bobby Keys' saxophone, powering the session with an irrepressible rasping low-blow burping sax display supported by Arthur Grenslade's horn filled orchestra, the effect is thunderous, elevated by Chris Farlowe's animalistic vocal and belligerent breathless tone, which made him, for me, the greatest of all British R&B voices.
Most of the time Andrew Loog Oldham had Chris Farlowe covering Rolling Stones recordings, he covered five notable tracks. The Rick Gunnell production wriiten by Oldham with completely off-piste but as far as Northern Soul concerned quite easily his best.
Farlowe was a proper MOD, with a proper soul voice... this red/white demo is quite easily his most desirable 45.

My halcyon days of Northern Soul were 1971 through 1975 when the most of the timeless anthems, were born. Some became life changing, ownership was a "credibility" leap. to own Jerry Williams "Because I Love You " in 1972 was akin to a "Mini Cooper S" with wide chrome wheels; a cause for a puffed out chest and some unbegrudged bragging-rights.
Knowing the lyrics off by heart, singing them out loud, in the back of a white Ford transit van with 12 of your "besties" chugging up the M6, we were the finest of the full-throated Northern Soul Boys Choir in motion. Jerry Williams "Because I Love You" was our go-to spirit lifter.
So just imagine our excitement when word reached the "Pork Pie chorale" another version of our #1 anthem had been found?
Apparently "Chip Tyler" guided by the same team who constructed Jerry's masterclass. Jerry Williams, Richie Rome cut this mighty fine rendition which allowed us comprehend the correct lyrics for the first time. Great version nobody could say different.
!0 years later I actually found dark green stock copy in the wild, in Sacramento, the most worthy record I found that trip, and I still cherish the memory. I vividly remember every "special" disc I found during my now curtailed digging career.
Unquestionably a Killer version, undeniably a 1000 times rarer than Jerry W. on Calla.
To say we are happy today, if we had a car with a cassette player, i do think I'd go for a drive and have sing-song to relive the M6 safari.

This is their very first 45, a 1965 project from the desk of jazzman Lonnie Hewitt of Oakland, California vocal-group stomper that has took decades to reach the high state of alert, that recent DJ plays have triggered. Whilst you have every right to be bemused, as this disc received only sparse NS plays through decades, even though, this is archetypal vocal-group Northern Soul bristling with every ingredient the dancer seeks to inspire their moves.
A deceptive tinkling piano intro, collides with a barrage of blaring brass, seamless soaring vocals, key changes, crescendos that peak at exactly the right moments, counter-balanced by low-blown horns ... Real-deal Northern Soul that Bay-Area writer producer Lonnie Hewitt crafted so precisely. Giving The Ballads a foothold to release 14 more 45's and 2 albums during their 20 year + career, that also gave Freddie Hughes the springboard for his solo adventures.
Arguably the most accomplish gathering to emerge from Oakland, California their consistency of high-quality recordings is 2nd. to none, with this 1965 session transferred from Lonnie's base at Wee Records, 988 42nd. street, Oakland to William "Bunky" Sheppard's Chicago outlet, then going another notch up for Vee Jay to handle National distribution, but only for it to received a cool reception, sales wise.
PS don't overlook the interesting part 2 version with an organ replacing the vocals, the voices coming back in again, laying out sa mish-mash that actually work, quite well.
A huge tune of this very moment, a crowd pleaser that snoozed for far too long.

The very extreme of "haunting" Northern Soul, soulful it hurts.
Texas's premier soul vocal-group move north and east to New York, leaving Abe Epstein's iconic San Antonio imprint of Dynamic Records behind. Even though every one of its 23 single 45 releases rose to become highly collectable and sought-after.
But now under the influence of two equally gifted producers Robert Bateman & Lou Courtney, again Willie Cooper and Marshall Boxley team offer up something truly special,; stomach-tightening harmony soul, composed by these two inseparable friends, who's collaborations dug deep into this group's extreme ability to convey a hopelessness, misery, pain and despair via the uniquely imploring vocal of Willie Cooper
It was the original a-side "Give In" that caused much Northern Soul interest during the early 70's with Robert Bateman drawing from his Detroit years, constructing a wicked "Norman Whitfield" influenced NS dancer benefitting from all those deliberately rasping edges from both the voices and the arrangement. Great gritty Northern Soul that never quite hit NS-classic-status during those highly competitive times.
But as Northern Soul went through its latest transformative stage, with tortured soulful down-tempo harmony steppers becoming the sophisticated new trend of soulful-dance. "It's So Hard To Break A Habit " started to have its day, becoming a major global "want" as "Harmony steppers" rose to become the "in" style of the moment.
Again two "killers" on one disc both benefitting from the unique vocal of Willie Cooper that gave up an unusual blend of edgy emotion, riding a soft rasping that accentuates his powerful soaring falsetto, this incredible voice was complimented by his writing prowess with help from his neighbor and group stalwart Marshall Boxley.
On side one, "Cooper's" spectacular vocal is perfectly framed as he effortless ascends from one pleading phrase to the next. Reinforced by the Bateman / Courtney command of the backing musicians, gone are the their signature Tex-Mex horns that featured in so many of Epstein's productions, replaced by New York nous. Two totally contrasting sides but both truly worthy of NS turntable attention.
I'm captivated by the off-the-scale pain of being unable to "move on", but also recognise that a second time around renaissance with "Give In" would also be a heaven-sent revival.

If you're one of the multitude of Northern Soul collector who see an inescapable beauty in the super rare BLACK RCA stock copy complete with its birth-sleeve, you will not need me reminding them this is undoubtably the least seen of them all.
Absolutely NO copies have ever been listed on DISCOGS since its launch in November 2000 nearly 26 years ago and the world of global record dealers and collectors have failed to list a copy for sale.
To comprehend why some RCA Black stock copies have become "grails"; you first have to understand, whilst RCA where very willing to press 20,000 plus promo's of a single title, for RADIO STATION DJ saturation. It was not uncommon for RCA to mailout as many 4 copies of a promo per DJ on the station's roster. Excessive overkill you would think, but I have witnessed radio station inventory with 60's RCA promo 45s, in what we would consider an unnecessary quantity.
When I queried why so many copies RCA promos?. One in-house radio programmer revealed it was RCA policy saturate his workspace with RCA promo copies. Hence the promo copies of non-hits are way more prolific than those seldom seen BLACK stock copies.
In the case of "Larry Cappel " "Hush, Hush" a bongo and horn assisted, snarling New York Teddy Vann Northern Soul persuader of immense muscular power, sweetened by persistent piano pulses, sweetened by shrill girl-group choruses. A sleeper with a strong cult following you'll fully join, when the soundfile enters your space, like a Jeff Dale "Beast Ballad" this tune drips with untold menacing presence, with the right DJ with imagination and nous, it would stir his followers into turntable voyeurs.
Great tune that has snoozed for far to long, as a BLACK STOCK one of the rarest Northern Soul floor-destroyers "in waiting" do not pass by whether you be an adventurous NS DJ or a RCA Black ju**ie..

The much rarer YELLOW label press. Two fantastic girl-group Northern Soul recordings on one disc, by Columbus, Ohio lady who only released this solitary 45, that was possibly cut to help her settle into her new life in Los Angeles, where she married Jazz/Soul/Gospel artist Marvin Jenkins.
At first back in the early 70s it was "Everything Under The Sun" that shook the dancefloors of Britain; an obvious NS Stomper underpinned by a well drilled girl-group cooing, oohing and squealing at all the right time, marshalled by violinist Sidney Sharp.
Wonderful slab of proper Northern Soul sadly got abandoned within the avalanche of the mind-blowing discoveries of mid-70s. Back then we'd only seen the yellow Hondo copies, same as Johnny Barnes on Hondo.
Fast forward into the 80s a handful of black label copies surface and some enterprising NS DJ flipped it over for "moody" side "Crook His Little Finger" and BOOM!! It slotted seamlessly into that sulking Northern Soul style brought to life by those "dig deeper" Stafford TOTW era DJs.
"Crook His Little Finger" became and instant dancefloor fuel for those seeking dancefloor immersion into the more emotional emotional side of Northern Soul, as a besotted sister wonders "what's the matter with me" supported by potent kettle drums, a barrage of trumpets lifting the session to greatness; as Ann Heywood totally convinces as the feeble, totally in-love victim with a man, you fear will take advantage of (men do that, don't they!).
This 45 gives-up back to back Northern Soul excellence. Mid-60s Los Angeles girl vocal excellence, guided by two legendary L.A. arrangers Ernie Freeman & Rene Hall. This copy is the black label variation and totally flawless in every way!

Lucky enough to turn up a second copy of this aching New York vocal-group winner. Bobby Long supported by "The Dealers" one of my go to groups when I'm looking to be energized by a NS stomper I've not heard in a while, we are presuming these are the same guys who gave up that Northern Soul sleeper that has been promising to break through huge for the last 50 years.
Sadly "You Got It" bemusingly slept just on the edge of greatness, unlike "I Gotta Have Love Too" "You Got It" is much easier to come by, if it was truly really rare, it has got the instant quality to stand up as a 4 figure tune.
"I Gotta Have Love Too" is three years later on, it too, is drenched in much-bigger ticket, giving up an uplifting "Crossover" Northern Soul feel to. Benefitting from exceptionally enthusiastic backing harmony "The Dealers" drive Bobby Long's lead through. Strong choruses and sharp harmony, enrich backdrop of strings, sympathetic horns.
The possibilities are endless, a tune that would slot into any NS DJ's set, once the overdue exposure happens, his uplifting experience the value is gonna rocket. If you haven't already, get in on the ground-floor before you know what happens.
This disc is rarely seen in such clean Excellent + condition, another highly regarded Randy Stewart project, to celebrate.

A thumping Chicago R&B floor-filler, as the seriously elusive 1965 - authentic original press!
An addictive Chicago Northern Soul R&B mover, a current spin that is getting more and more in-demand; as upfront and imaginative DJ Darren Sykes and many others who inject explosive tunes to fire-up their sets. So get ready, Soul Sister Leoncy Lloyd is about to take you on a hair-raising trip through dancefloor destruction.
Opening up with the pulsating guitar rhythms by Ulyesses Warren, inviting Leoncy’s convincing voice to step into this compelling mid-tempo dancer, quickly enhanced by the addition of subtly stabbing horns. The three components fuse beautifully, into a musclebound dance session; saturated in everything we adore about Chicago and street-level productions utilizing local talent.
Even the neighborhood printing of the labels has it’s charms, when after two attempts to get the typesetting right. This press comes out with the first “O” in FOOLING appearing as the number “0”. With the another adjustment to the letters they reset the label, but failed to notice “You” was set in lower casing.
Personally I’m drawn to these rare D.I.Y. street-level anomalies on these irresistible labels. Nothing like, though, as irresistible as “Lil Gray’s” singing style. Her uncanny ability to hold a note with that stinging vocal, then slowing transforming a word into a soothing hum... once again U.S. Warren steps in to strut his prowess with the guitar, fabulous stuff!
A captivating example of urban Chicago Soul/R&B by a lady who unfortunately only recorded 3 45’s in total. All in sequence for label owner Mr. Warren. Then sadly she disappeared off the recording scene... Leaving the rare soul collector and the DJ with much to investigate and enjoy about this little-known Diva. ..

WHAT A TUNE!!! a Northern Soul emblematic anthem!
The ultimate girl lead - male vocal group call and response NS dancefloor filler.
Here today as the REAL-DEAL March 1968 original promo copy with the PINK "A" indicator on the "I'm Gonna Love You A Long, Long Time " label.
Leading lady Patty Russell supported by her trio of guys The Emblems Eddie Watts, Vance Walker, Alexander Wilde. Together they epitomise the late 60's Philly sound; with another Northern Soul anthem from the office of Leroy Lovett and Frank Bendinellil. Two guys who provided the Northern Soul scene with so many Philly delights, as they progressed through the 60's recording NS sounds other fabulous tunes from Patti & The Emblems on Kapp. With "I'm Gonna Love You A Long, Long Time" being the apex of their work in 1968 but received such disappointing sales the black store copy has long been recognized as one of the rarest of all the coveted "black" stock 45s.
This dynamic duo Leroy Lovett and Frank Bendinellil work was sadly obscured by other great Philadelphia writing teams, Ironically Gamble & Huff had just launched the beginnings of TSOP pushing this talented twosome even further into the shadows. This soaring crash-bang-wallop production ticks all the boxes; so much so when original "A" "My Heart's So Full Of You" failed in the market. Kapp quickly switched the a-side to "I'm Gonna Love You A Long, Long Time" but unfortunately this side also fell through the cracks, with lack of radio airplay.
The unforgettable Cape Canaveral launch of Patti's vocal, rocketing skyward on an high-octane whoosh of male vocals, is one of the most instantly motivational Northern Soul intros all them all! Propelled by g-force horns, pattering bongos, crashing cymbals, searing strings; with those triumphant male group vocals increasing in intensity, whilst being occasionally peppered by the inspired inclusion glockenspiel chimes. Launch pad genius is not too strong a word for this opening! This is instantaneous Northern Soul, that Leroy & Frank have been working towards in the battle to head-up the 60's sound of Philadelphia.
Flip it over for the original A-side "My Heart's So Full Of You " you are again treated to a mountainous production, featuring a magnificent full orchestra and seamless harmony vocals. This phenomenal Philly mover does the "The Brill Building" sound.
..is not to be passed by.

Here is an example of top-drawer Chicago born Crossover Northern Soul. The much-recorded Floyd Smith / Richard Tufo creation, is given the John Edwards treatment to compare him with Nate Evans, James Phelps versions. But we find John's impeccable phrasing and effortless delivery ideal for this emotional floater the superior interpretation. Plus the bonus of the equally as enthralling flipside, is too much to disregard, it was a voice that nailed him to be an indispensable member of "The Spinners" for 23years.
As a single artist John had recorded with some of the finest Southern Soul sessions for Aware. Working with the likes of: Clayton Ivey, Terry Woodford, Al Gardner, Clinton Moon, Sam Dees etc. Moving north to the Windy City crafted this superior double-sider of seamless mid-tempo soul dance. "The Look On Your Face" on of the best-loved of all "Crossover" delights.
The flipside delivers the genius of Phillip Mitchell with the wonderful breezy saxophone cradling "It's The Little Things That Count" the perfect vehicle for John's effortless phrasing of the advisory lyrics on how to keep your woman feel wanted and loved.
Both song paint a vivid picture of responsibilities of partnership in love.
Two beautifully constructed songs, eloquently delivered by a superior soul man.

Tari Stevens = Christine Cooper?
A debate that still rages on, but all common sense evidence points to them being the same lady as the flipside " (They Call Him) A Bad Boy" pressed in March 1966 appeared on the flip of Christine Cooper "Heartaches Away My Boy" pressed April1966.
I can't remember if Ian Levine, armed himself with "Tari Stevens – (Your Love Was Just A) False Alarm" during those legendary play-lists he tantalized us with. Certainly this soaring girl vocal style, woven into a relentless thumping NS production.
But even in those formidable early NS years Tari was a very elusive lady. "False Alarm" never quite hit the heights of "Heartache Away My Boy" although it did get prematurely bootlegged (on a horrid green label styrene Los Angeles, Monarch bootleg) almost immediately, when it started to receive some plays on the scene. A bootleg, in those days of 1975, of course meant no self-respecting NS DJ played it again, until it became an "oldie classic" which rarity prevented.
Philly based Sal Tramiaci & Richie Cordell along with Jerry Kasenetz & Jeff Katz created the Super K production "Sound" ie Sweet Three, Christine Cooper both capturing "The Motown Sound", the team actually eclipse "Motown magic" by crafting more than one of those heart-stopping Northern Soul experiences.
Sal Tramiaci & Ritchie Cordell created in "Tari Stevens" "False Alarm" it was statement of how special "Super K" was about to become.
"Tari" was perfect for this project, with her powerfully sweet voice, cradled by shrill girl choruses, whilst a cascade of volcanic-charged vibes and horns rained down, guitar and drum breaks build up to a memorable crescendo, repeated over again.
PROPER Girl-Group, driven by unparalleled intensity making it such a potent, instant Northern Soul stomper.
Whilst this masterpiece of the girl-sound, an instant Northern Soul igniter, is a true "lost Soul" gem most likely it never sold a unit upon release, it did however hone the "Super K" skills in organizing an overblown production into a perfect storm; as the Super K team hit worldwide fame with their "Kasenetz - Katz Musical Circus" - Quick Joey Small - a huge fave at our local Youth club...
