The seldom recorded New York based Jackson Brothers started life under stewardship of the vastly experience Billy Mure and Jerry Leiber & Mike Stoller in 1959.
As the Righteous Brothers style of big production, muscular vocals became popular this obscure gathering where fully equipped to deliver that “in” sound of booming verbal-volleyball between masterful moody vocals.
Brilliantly introduced by sledgehammer piano, before the rasping brooding vocal contemplates if there is any “truth” lies behind the rumours that his girl still wants him. His hope amplified his hope riding an uplifting fanfare of trumpets.
The perfect big hall “niter” sound, proven by the full floor response at Benn Rugby on every occasion it hit the turntables.
But do not pass by the mighty NS beat ballad hidden on the flipside.

Since those Golden Years of Wigan Casino to today's eclectic scene of wider tastes, the shifting tastes of Northern Soul's musical styles have altered so many times. Ending up in today's diet of the well trodden paths of NS Classic style stompers, a cheeky brief flirt with Funk, Beat Ballad Heaven making an occasional but very welcome appearance in the more cultured DJ sets. To the super-Soulful crossover grooves saturated in emotion and class in equal amounts that seem to top the charts of dancefloor demand today.
BEFORE YOU TODAY IS CURRENTLY ONE OF THE MOST WANTED GIRL VOCAL NORTHERN SOUL CROSSOVER TUNE OF THEM ALL.
The reason I say this, here's a double-delight of Northern Soul I first heard in circa 1977 when I found a handful of Mir-A-Don 45s about 7 different 45's a few copies of each. But this one stood out as being a different label colour and by a girl at the time I'd never heard of.. Just imagine my delight when it turned out to be classic style Northern Soul.. "Good Girl (Can You Be)" was an unknown and a killer. I considered dead-right for Wigan Casino was my first thought, so I rang Richard Searling and played him it down the phone. Sounded absolutely brilliant, whether he bought a copy, I can't remember; but Soul Sam certainly did and put his weight behind it; plus Ken Draper played it at "The Fleet" to a huge dancefloor response..
But through this early NS journey not once, did I or anyone else playing the disc notice the utterly breathtaking excursion into Northern Soul Crossover that "Is It True" s[pills from the speakers.. not until after the millennium did those "shifting sands" start to move towards superior mid-paced Soulful dancers like "Is It True", today it's the stomping "Good Girl" that nobody seems to mention or play..
For me personally, "Is It True" today is a huge part of my DJ set, it is without question one of the ultimate Sister mid-tempo grooves of all-time.. and seems to be getting bigger and bigger by the day.. Without exception when I drop it, somebody will come to the stage and ask "what is this...?" I have recently been asked by several DJs seeking ownership of this crucial Crossover spin, to sell it.
Click the soundfile and take a deep breath, Patty Stokes is about to hit you with impeccable Northern Soul Crossover, followed by a top-drawer, classic style Northern Soul girl dancer, backed beautifully by "The Ascots" vocal group harmonies.. this too is a fantastic tune that may yet have it's day again.. when the sands shift back the quality Northern Soul 45s that haven't been played to death.

Sandy's other double helping, the Holy Grail on "Masterpiece" "Your Love Is Everything" "When We're All Alone Tonight" all top-drawer sweet, sweet girl tunes, saturated in a mystical quality.
Here is "Sandy's" other 45 that is proving just as elusive, whilst gracing the selective DJ sets of Liam Flanders at Europe's UK's most revered and eagerly awaited Rare-Soul weekender "TUFF-LOVE" in Liverpool. and heralded DJ sets from Chris Anderton and his equally anticipated must attend rare-soul extravaganza "A Dab Of Soul" weekender at Llandudno.
Two weekenders you are likely to hear, these sulking masterpieces spun, spreading the word subtle is genius as far as "Chillout" tunes are concerned
Again another "Fortier" creation that delivers, not one, but two impressive cruisers, shimmering with serious rarity and distilled seductiveness.

A Northern Soul anthem in by far its rarest form. a 1971 Australian promo copy.
A legendary spring of 1970 British b-side from a Kentuckian crooner, that actually required multi-national input, to create. In Australia it was promoted to the "A" side but still failed to register any sales.
Firstly coming from the pen of French speaking America songwriter Nanette Workman, who spent most of her career working out of Quebec Canada. Scotland provided the arranger Nicky Welsh, whilst the British contribution came from a producer Bob Barrett who often called himself "Dwayne Detroit"..
This cocktail of international contributors made even stranger by the fact, "This Beautiful Day" started life as a UK flipside, as UK EMI desperately searched for a follow-up recording to emulate Solomon's huge success with "She Wears My Ring" 3 years earlier. Then a year later EMI changed the artist name to "Levi Jackson" - reissued "This Beautiful Day" as the a-side in the hope it would sell on the wave of Soul music enthusiasm sweeping the UK at the time, both releases failed miserably with sales, both passed by unnoticed, leaving the NS collector with two British rarities to chase.
NOTE this Australian promo only 45 was launched 3 months after Levi Jackson but EMI Australia still retained the original artist name of Solomon King, and it received no airplay what so ever. Remaining today as one of Australia's rarest NS 45s.
Before you today, is the November 1971 first press,fine clean condition. A British born Northern Soul classic that filled the dancefloors since the very early 70's. A record that failed to sell, swiftly deleted from the EMI catalogue. Secretly brought back to life under a pseudonym 15 months later. Leaving the Northern Soul DJ / collector with two choices, this Australian promotion coincided with the UK Levi Jackson relaunch.

A sweet soul Grail, from this young high school band, born in Macon Georgia, now enjoying a global reputation for its impossible rarity, its seamless sweet soul harmony that instantly imprisons your emotions. Is now cruising the internet as the "Low-rider" soul movement dominates the internet.
This 8 man soulful gathering led by lyricist Roy Miller, with Leroy Ace Miller, Willie Morris, William Reeves, Gary Pitts, Milton Denmark, Michael Jones and Tony Hollingshed, this gang of talent hopefuls displayed their material far and wide, eventually getting their work committed to vinyl 500 miles North from home. Sadly that's where the story ends.
Despite their blinding raw talent, this their only release never led to any meaningful success; and this was sadly to be their only 7" 45 release.
It now is one of the most hunted rare sweet soul ballads on the worldwide rare-soul scene. this is low-rider excellence of the very rarest kind, a male-vocal harmony treasure.
Not just harmony group vocalists, the flipside, gives up a mean keyboard slab of electro-funk, no words more required, just check out impressive. Double sound file lifted directly off this disc. This is a super-cool 45 hardly anyone can boast of ownimg.

It is not often you can say, a record producer takes a Motown recording and makes it superior to the original. This Norman Whitfield composition never achieved more than album track recognition in 1967. Until a quick on the draw Charles Stewart saw potential for his four man Texas Soul gathering to revamp it into a hit.
Rondalis Tandy, Wenzon Mosley, Eddie Nixon and James Mays with his rich baritone. Do such a beautiful job on pouring out vocal-group "Motown", whilst still retaining a strong sense street-corner teamwork. Sprinkling the "edges" with a seamless flood of harmony Soul, as that icy-cold lead falsetto completely wins you over..

Here is an extremely elusive Simon Soussan "find" from his prolific early 70's days of Northern Soul discovery, it was a weekly event, that Simon would flag up amazing new discoveries for the top British DJs to feast upon. But nobody checked out the fearsome flipside.
Originally scheduled for release on Bill Silva's Diplomacy Records but they unfortunately ceased trading late 1965, so label owner Bill Silva created a brand new, unique imprint "Commonwealth Records" to get his daughter's recording onto the market.
"Under My Thumb" enjoyed only brief Wigan Casino exposure, another case of rarity hindering its progress nationwide; with no other DJs or clubs seem to have a copy to give it the necessary concerted push. Thus falling into obscurity but its real-rarity reputation holding firm among collectors of the obscurer Wigan Casino spins.
This was a great sister version of the Wayne Gibson's anthem, that many have never forgotten, as a girl-version stunned everybody at a time when other "versions" of great songs, were well in favor.

But has so often happens when you get the opportunity to revisit a rare 45, the previously overlooked flipside turns out to be the winner! "In Cold Blood" captures April in a mean "Garage" "Mod" mood. In typical West Coast style, April gives up a feral Lydia Pense style, curled-up lip, belligerent performance backed up by a male-chorus and a avalanche of moody keyboard and snarling guitar, peppered with relentless drumming. Full of attitude, antagonistic combative thoughts of revenge.
A really cool tune, ideal for the investigative MOD DJ, as I believe, it has never reached the turntables of that exclusive, vibrant scene.
Two very rare sides, one that will ignite the memories of early Wigan recruits, the other side opening up a chance to spin somewhere right now; we think everybody missed a killer in the shape of "In Cold Blood" that first time round.

Here is the rarely seen, authentic 1966 original press, as opposed to the horrid counterfeit/reissue press you encounter from time to time, as can be seen by clicking on the 3 images on Discogs, the 3rd image (glossy finish silver label) from left to right is the 70's REISSUE/BOOTLEG/ COUNTERFEIT which has a glossy paper finish with poor cerise red text definition, with the printed Chicago, Illinois missing from the label, and the matrix italic J.P. missing from the etched in matrix. (see image)
This listing is the elusive authentic 1966 matt finish "silver" with a soft "Cerise" shade of red for the credits. (see images) Discogs does have two images of the authentic original, one image of the "counterfeit" which is easy to identify under visual comparison.
The growing demand in this 45, heighten by the flipside "My Admiration For You".
The tables have completely turn of which is the high value. In the mid-70s "Heaven Is In Your Arms" enjoyed Cleethorpes Pier / Wigan Casino exposure, with its upbeat feel-good pumping saxophone pulses driving the falsetto lead and his young teammates; towards a rather special instrumental break, this was considered killer and popular vocal group Northern Soul that triggered the reissue/counterfeit copies circa 1976. When, as always happen to bootlegged NS plays, the record fell off the DJ playlists but remained an essential hard-to-find Chicago collectors piece.
Fast forward to the 21st century "My Admiration For You" became a much sough-after Sweet Soul / Lowrider ballad also benefitting from those icy Falsetto's gliding on a wave of cooing harmony from his teammates and soaring high elevated horns.
This is Chicago sweet soul at its most convincing, beautifully tight and imploring as the lead confesses he is totally besotted with his lady.
Two impressive Southside vocal-group winners, one a Northern Soul dancer long overdue for a revival, the other side a stunning sweet harmony "confessional".
Noting all of their 60s Chicago creations from Bruce Childs, Kenneth Childs, Ralph Childs, Sherman Myles, Walter Smith are considered very special examples of vocal-group Northern Soul.

So very wanted, is this frantic Philly stomper that takes no prisoners. Once again The Limitations is stirring up a storm on the Northern Soul Liz Bacone was equally comfortable with a stomping vocal-group dancer or the silky harmony ballad, as with her other recording on this her own D.I.Y. label by The Voltaires she offers the collectors fine examples of each genre.
Michael Troutman's lyrics have to hold on tight to an explosion of Bongo rhythms and wah-wah guitar licks, the lead vocal is perfectly pitched to cut right through the wall pulsating dance beats.
A rich lead voice, spits out his desperation and regret, cradled by his teammates comforting harmonic cooing. The mix it spectacular, avoiding confusion at all times; Miss Bacone maintaining clarity, whilst the vocalists battle the searing pace and potency of the production. A feat she pulls off perfectly, crafting a Northern Soul juggernaut, a runaway-truck of a tune.
Flip it over, Liz shows her finesse, when guiding a most beautiful sweet soul stroller an exquisite ballad. One for the vocal-group harmony connoisseurs, certainly pricking up the ears of Lowrider fan?
revealing just one fine hairline on the flipside vinyl, of course not affecting play.
This copy is immaculate, mint minus in every way.

In between each encounter I have with "I Surrender", the record grows in my estimation and appreciation, considerably every time.
There are a few records, that when you've not heard them in a while, they still have the power to lift the hairs on your neck in recognition of their brilliance. This Eddie Holman master-class of late 60's Philadelphia soul does exactly that, repeatedly. I hear it after a few months of being without, my Eddie Holman withdrawal system kicks-in.
Then there's a rare breed of sound that does that every time you hear it. "I Surrender" is one of those rare tunes that makes me pause and await the inevitable adrenaline rush, as Eddie's flawless falsetto takes flight... whilst the flipside " I Love You" falls into the first category.
Philadelphia Northern Soul with the benefit of a truly spectacular vocal, cradled by an arrangement that defies a superlative. The opening drum/guitar merger is lacerated by merciless stabbing horns that set the dance rhythms in for Eddie Holman's spectacular falsetto to swoop into.. delivering vocal deferential only the true greats can attempt; One moments it's a searing falsetto reverberating around your head, then a few key drops and you have a voluptuous velvet vocal "surrendering" his love..
It's brilliant from the first note to the last, it's not gonna cost you a king's ransom, but is any Northern Soul collection complete without a copy> ... we think not
PS don't forget the other side is another incomparable Soul masterpiece...

A Northern Soul anthem, in irreproachable mint condition.
Johnny Curtis & Maggie Bell can we credit this pairing with being the only Glaswegians to record a Northern Soul classic?
Not a common source of classic Northern Soul but this recording for British Decca then exported to Nashville, The recording, certainly underlines two rasping Celtic vocals of note, cradled by yet another standout Johnny Harris orchestral backdrop. With Johnny embellishing the session with his signature approach to blue-eyed R&B. Both possess authentic soulful throaty vocals.
But put then together under the eye of Johnny Harris both artists rebound off each, delivering a captivating Northern Soul volley-ball. Mr. Curtis was the perfect springboard for Maggie Bell to bounce off. This is not the first time or will iot be the last that Johnny Harris has been highlighted on these pages. Just like John Schroeder he was an underestimated talent who produced, arranged and crafted so many great "Brit-Soul" recordings.
Discovered first on it's ultra rare UK Decca release, it stayed rather an exclusive spin for a privileged few. Then to surprised British NS followers some Hickory 45's started to trickle onto the scene, and Frankie & Johnny went viral and F & J became a monster play, countrywide.
Today the USA Hickory supply flow has long run dry, and this DJ variation in immaculate condition is the only likely path to ownership, if you are dedicated to owning and playing NS originals..
A Northern Soul big-bollock crowd-pleaser a classic that guarantees a refill the dancefloor rescue mission; just like it did back in day when Wigan, Yate, Cleethorpes, The Ritz all shook to Celtic tones of Glasgow... and Johnny Harris's richly equipped orchestra lifted its presemce to the max!
