BMW recommends 0W-12 oil for some of its newer engines, but is it the best choice for long term engine health?

BMW focuses heavily on efficiency, whereas we’re also interested in how these engines hold up at 150,000 or even 200,000 miles.

That’s why we’re testing 0W-12 against 0W-20 in our own X5 50e.

We’re not saying BMW is wrong. We just want the data to help us give customers the best advice.

BMW is now using 0W-12 oil in some of its newer engines. It’s almost like water.

We were surprised by how thin it is, so we’re putting it to the test on our own X5 50e.

We’ll run 0W-20 for 6,000 miles, take an oil sample, then do the same with 0W-12.

Both grades are approved for this engine, but we’re interested to see how they compare when it comes to engine wear and oil condition.

We’ll share the results once we’ve got them.

One failed fuel pipe. A new ECU and wiring loom needed.

This BMW 2 Series suffered a fuel pipe failure that allowed diesel to travel through the wiring loom and into the ECU.

After discussing the options with the customer, we’ve replaced the ECU, wiring loom and faulty fuel pipe.

The new ECU has been programmed to the car and we’re now carrying out the final checks.

A pretty expensive repair caused by one failed component.

BMW M140i in with a suspected crankshaft position sensor fault.

We’re carrying out a few checks to get to the bottom of it before throwing parts at the problem.

92,000 miles and this is the state of the air filter.

This X5 M50d came in for a full service, gearbox oil change, transfer box and differential servicing, along with a full health check.

The service history is a bit patchy, and the condition of this filter tells us quite a lot about how the car has been maintained.

It’s not always the expensive problems you need to look out for. Sometimes the simplest things tell you the most.

This little box plays a big part in keeping your BMW’s high voltage battery safe.

We’ve removed the battery from this G05 X5 after tracing its high voltage faults to a failed safety battery box.

Normally, this unit can disconnect the battery in an accident, but this one has failed internally without the car being involved in a crash.

Once replaced, the battery needs to be reassembled and tested before the car can go back on the road.

More progress on the BMW 840 and we’ve found the cooling system full of deposits, with the old water pump badly blocked.

The radiator and water pump have now been replaced, but the bigger job is flushing everything out to make sure coolant can flow properly again.

What might seem like a quick fix for a leak can create a much bigger problem down the line.

The BMW 840 is turning into quite a project.

One injector is completely dead and replacements are proving difficult to get hold of.

We’ve also removed the cam covers to sort the oil leaks, but found the old paint flaking away inside. The last thing we want is that ending up in the oil and potentially blocking the pickup.

A bit more work than expected, but we’d rather get it right than rush it back together
