A candidate who cannot make tomorrow’s interview is not necessarily less committed. They may simply be taking their current commitments seriously.

In specialist markets, judging interest by diary availability risks screening out the very people a client wants to hire: those trusted with projects, customers or responsibilities they cannot drop at short notice.

What can you do in this situation? Start with agreeing interview blocks of time in the first instance, so the candidate has options. Ask the candidate for their realistic availability upfront too

There is a difference between someone who needs an alternative slot and someone who repeatedly misses agreed commitments without explanation.

An additional interview stage should produce new evidence, not just another person’s reassurance.

In specialist recruitment, there are good reasons to add a stage. A technical discussion might test a capability the first interview couldn’t assess. A meeting with a key stakeholder might clarify how the candidate would handle competing priorities.

But asking a candidate to walk through their CV for the fourth time is unlikely to resolve a hiring decision.

What remains unproven, and how will this conversation test it?
