Here's a question we often ask at the start of a transformation programme...
"How does this project support your wider business objectives?"

It's surprising how often that question starts a completely different conversation.
It's easy to focus on individual projects.
But successful organisations look beyond individual delivery.
They understand how every project, every team and every milestone contribute to the wider business objectives.

Dependency management isn't just about tracking tasks.

It's about connecting people, priorities and outcomes.
When those connections are visible, organisations gain greater confidence, better decision making and far more predictable delivery.
Because successful projects don't happen in isolation.
They succeed together.

That's why our PMO and Programme Management teams spend just as much time understanding the relationships between projects as they do manage individual workstreams.
When everyone can see the bigger picture, better decisions follow.
Remember, every great transformation is a story.
Happy endings do exist, not just in fairy tales, but only when every chapter connects to the next.

The same is true for complex projects. When every team understands the bigger picture, delivery becomes clearer, collaboration becomes stronger, and successful outcomes become far more achievable.

We're incredibly proud to share that our Head of Marketing Margaret Speight has been named a finalist in the Marketing & Creative category at this year's Sub36 Awards.

This recognition couldn't be more deserved.

Over the last few years, she's played a huge part in shaping the North Star brand - telling our story, bringing our values to life, creating campaigns for clients that genuinely connect with people, and helping showcase the incredible work our team delivers every day.

But beyond the marketing itself, it's her creativity, commitment, and willingness to keep pushing herself that we're most proud of.

At North Star, we believe in recognising great people, celebrating their successes, and giving them the opportunity to grow. Seeing one of our own recognised alongside so many talented creatives from across Lancashire is a fantastic achievement.

Congratulations to all of the finalists, and best of luck for the interviews in September.
We'll certainly be cheering her on every step of the way. 🦄

If we had £1 for every time we heard...
"We just need more resource."
Sometimes that's true.

But often, the real challenge isn't a lack of people.
It's a lack of coordination.

Many organisations believe they need more projects, more reporting or bigger teams.
Often, what they really need is better visibility of how everything fits together.
When projects are connected through clear governance, shared visibility and regular communication, delivery becomes smoother and teams spend less time solving avoidable problems.
Success isn't always about doing more.

Quite often, it's about helping everyone move in the same direction.
That's where effective dependency management really adds value.
Sometimes the biggest improvement comes from connecting the dots that already exist rather than introducing something new.

A truth about project delivery that doesn't get talked about enough...
More often, it's hidden in the connections between projects.

A supplier running behind.
A key decision taking longer than expected.
A team supporting multiple initiatives.
One project depending on another to finish first.

These are all normal parts of project delivery.
The difference is whether they're visible and actively managed.

When dependencies are identified early, organisations gain greater control, improve collaboration and deliver with far more confidence.

One of the biggest lessons we've learned from supporting complex business transformations is that understanding the connections between projects is often just as important as understanding the projects themselves.

Managing dependencies early allows organisations to plan rather than react later.
It's one of the reasons strong PMOs spend just as much time understanding how projects connect as they do tracking progress.

The earlier you spot the link, the easier it is to manage the outcome.

As we often say:
"Small delays have a habit of becoming big problems."

One thing we've learned from delivering transformation programmes...
People rarely struggle because they're not working hard enough.

More often, they're working from different versions of the truth:
- One team is looking at one project plan.
- Another has their own tracker.
- Leadership has a programme dashboard.

And before long, everyone is asking the same question...
"Which one is the latest?"

One of the most valuable things a PMO can provide isn't another report.
It's visibility.

When everyone is working from a single, governed plan, priorities become clearer, leaders can make informed decisions, and potential issues become visible before they become problems.
We've seen organisations transform delivery simply by replacing multiple disconnected plans with one clear roadmap.

The work didn't change - the visibility did. And that often makes all the difference.

At North Star Projects, one of our core beliefs is that clarity builds confidence. Whether we're supporting a business through PMO-as-a-Service or delivering a large-scale transformation programme, our aim is always the same - helping everyone move forward together.

Most project delays don't start where you think they do
In our experience, it's rarely one big issue.

More often, it's lots of small bottlenecks that quietly build over time.
• Waiting on another team
• Shared resources becoming stretched
• Decisions taking a little longer than expected
• Projects heading in slightly different directions

On their own, these don't feel like major problems.
Together, they can have a real impact on delivery.

What's the biggest hidden cause of project delays in your organisation?
Is it:
• Unclear dependencies
• Slow decision making
• Limited resource capacity
• Changing priorities or
maybe something else?

Let us know in the comments.

When Great Teams Work Together, Great Projects Happen.

One of the biggest misconceptions in project delivery is that delays happen because people aren't working hard enough.

The opposite is often true.

Teams are working incredibly hard... they're just not always working in sync.
We saw this first-hand during a recent transformation programme delivering a new UK distribution centre for MegaGroup Logistic Services. Every workstream was interconnected. Warehouse fit-out, IT infrastructure, WMS, ERP integration, stock migration, operational training, carrier testing and customer communications all relied on one another.

No single team could succeed in isolation.

A delay in one area had the potential to impact every stage that followed.
That's why effective dependency management is so important.

It's not simply about knowing what needs to be done. It's about understanding what needs to happen first, who depends on it next, and how changes in one workstream can influence the wider programme.

When those connections are visible, something powerful happens.
Teams collaborate more effectively, decisions are made sooner, communication becomes clearer, and delivery gains momentum and confidence.
Good project management isn't about creating more meetings or more paperwork.
It's about creating clarity, connecting people, and ensuring everyone is working towards the same outcome.

Because when every workstream understands its role in the bigger story, that's when transformation really begins—and perhaps, just like the best fairy tales, the story has the opportunity for a successful ending.

Clarity Creates Confidence

When risk and dependency management is working well, the difference is noticeable:
• Decisions happen faster.
• Teams communicate more effectively.
• Risks are identified earlier.
• Delivery becomes more predictable.

And perhaps most importantly, leadership gains confidence.
Not because every challenge disappears - but because there is visibility, structure and a clear route forward when challenges arise.

Successful delivery isn't driven by activity alone, It's driven by alignment and alignment starts with clarity.

Good PMOs Create Clarity, Not Complexity

One of the most common misconceptions about PMOs is that they create more process.
Good PMOs create more clarity.

They help organisations:
✔ Align priorities
✔ Improve communication
✔ Surface risks early
✔ Reduce duplication
✔ Strengthen decision-making

The goal isn't more reporting, the goal is helping people work together more effectively.
When delivery feels controlled rather than chaotic, teams spend less time firefighting and more time creating value.

That's where the real impact is found.

A Missed Dependency Is a Hidden Risk

One of the biggest lessons we see across project portfolios is this:

A missed dependency isn't just a delay.
It's a risk.
If one team is waiting on another...
If a supplier misses a deadline...
If a project relies on an output that hasn't been delivered...

Those dependencies can quickly become delivery challenges.

The organisations that manage dependencies well tend to experience fewer surprises, smoother delivery and stronger stakeholder confidence.

Because when connections are visible, risks become manageable.
