🦈 Just two weeks ago, the Sharks were EVERYWHERE at the Goliath…
And watching this video, we are genuinely proud of what we’re building together. 💙
Just over 30 Royal Sharks Poker members got involved across the week, playing the Main Event, jumping into side events, picking up some brilliant cashes and, most importantly, representing the Sharks.
But for us, the best part wasn’t the results…
It was walking around the Goliath and constantly bumping into people wearing a Sharks patch, wristband or shirt.
Seeing players stop to ask how another Shark was getting on. Seeing people rail each other. Seeing someone bust a tournament, then go and support somebody else who was still in.
And seeing friendships that started around poker tables in pubs and clubs turn into groups of people travelling to one of the biggest poker festivals outside of Vegas, together.
That’s the bit we love. 🦈💙
You might have seen Martyn Everitt walking around in his “Evolution of a Poker Player” T-shirt.
It’s a funny little graphic that goes:
🐟 Fish → 🫏 Donkey → 👤 Human → 🦈 SHARK
It always gets a laugh and gets people talking at the tables.
But actually, when we think about what we’re trying to build with Royal Sharks Poker, there’s a bit more truth in it than you might realise.
We want there to be a genuine progression for poker players.
You might start by turning up to a £5 game at your local venue because you enjoy playing cards. Then you join a league, start seeing your results recorded, building your stats and unlocking achievements.
Maybe you win your first trophy. Maybe you qualify for something bigger. You meet more players along the way and, hopefully, your game improves too.
Then suddenly you’re travelling to casino events with people you’ve met through the Sharks.
And before you know it, you’re standing somewhere like the Goliath, wearing the badge and representing a poker community that you’ve become part of.
And that’s what we really mean when we talk about the evolution of a poker player.
Who knows where it ends?
Maybe you become a sponsored player. Maybe you find yourself playing a tournament you’d never normally have entered and win £50k+. Maybe you’re suddenly sitting at a table with someone you’ve spent years watching on a poker stream.
Why shouldn’t that happen?
It doesn’t matter where you’re starting from or when you joined. There’s a pathway for you.
And in a few years, we want you to be able to look back at your profile, your results, your trophies, the tournaments you’ve qualified for and, probably most importantly, the people you’ve met along the way…
…and actually see the poker story you’ve created and the legacy you’ve built.
🦈 That’s why our leagues are called Shiver Leagues.
A group of sharks is called a shiver.
And weirdly, that’s probably become one of the most accurate descriptions of what we’re building.
Because yes, once the cards are in the air, everyone wants to take each other’s chips. 😂
But away from the table, people help each other. They share advice, celebrate each other’s results, travel together and rail each other.
And when one of our players makes a deep run, you’ll normally find a group of Sharks somewhere behind them hoping they get the lot. 💙
We want more poker players to experience that.
There were 30+ Sharks at the Goliath this time.
We’d love there to be 50 next time. Then 100+.
And eventually, we’d love to be able to walk into any major poker event in the UK and see Shark patches everywhere.
We’re nowhere near finished yet. 🦈
