Yesterday was a very strange and emotional day as I officially retired after conducting my very last bespoke wedding ceremony for Emma and Joel at the Brig O Doon House Hotel.
It was a ceremony that I enjoyed every bit as much as any other wedding I’ve conducted and I just wished I was still 12 years younger.

12 years ago I set out on my journey as a Celebrant with Humanist Celebrants with Fuze Ceremonies. During this time I’ve been privileged to have conducted wedding ceremonies for around 500 couples as they set out on their journey together as husband and wife. Helping them to construct their own personal service using the words and content that they themselves have chosen has never felt like work.
Ever since day one our mantra has always been “Your Wedding Your Way” and this has resulted in so many unique experiences that brides and grooms, guests, other suppliers and myself have all enjoyed.

I honestly believe that I have felt more satisfaction from delivering a special funeral service. This is because I have been trusted by the family of the deceased to provide them with a celebration of the life of their loved one and it’s incredibly important because it’s the last thing they can do for the loved one they have lost.

It has truly been an honour and a privilege to be part of the Fuze family, so much so that when I was attending wedding shows and speaking to couples about their big day I always told them that if they didn’t book me to conduct their ceremony then I wanted them to book one of my Fuze colleagues.

I would like to publicly thank Anne Widdop and Morag Webster for giving me this opportunity and providing the platform for the best 12 years of my working life. Thank you to Laura Widdop and Morag for always being on the other end of the phone when required. Thank you also to Laura for being there with me yesterday.
My wife Margaret also came along yesterday to witness the end of her 12 years as a “Wedding Widow”

Thank you to all the other Fuze celebrants I’ve had the pleasure of working with plus all the suppliers I’ve worked with, wedding coordinators, photographers, videographers, florists, and wonderful musicians like Liam Rogers who was the piper at my final wedding yesterday. I would have loved to have shared it with Meredith McCrindle or Ginny & The Tonic as well, having worked at so many weddings with them over the years.

Time to enjoy other pursuits including HBSA Hospital Radio, spending time with granddaughters, spending more time at the chalet at Maidens and who knows what else.

After a funeral, the world can suddenly feel very quiet.

While ceremonies mark an important moment of remembrance, grief doesn’t end when the funeral finishes. For many people, that’s when the reality of loss truly begins.

As part of Demystifying Death Week, we want to gently remind people that support is available and that no one has to navigate grief alone.

We’ve created a Support After the Funeral resource page featuring organisations and services that can offer listening support, bereavement guidance, counselling, and help for those struggling after loss.

Whether you are grieving yourself or supporting someone who is, we hope this resource helps people feel a little less alone 💛

Even after 12 years as a celebrant it’s amazing that I still managed to conduct a wedding ceremony at a venue for the first time last week.

I was honoured to conduct Janine and Finlay’s wedding at Dalgarven House and the fact that Janine’s dad Owen has been a friend of mine for over 50 years made it even more special.
