We've been asked to invite the members of the Far West Business Network to a local screening of the People’s Emergency Briefing film on the risks to British life and the UK economy from ongoing damage to nature and to our climate.

Please see the post below from St.Just-in-Penwith Town Council for details.

People's Emergency Briefing

In November 2025, the National Emergency Briefing (NEB) brought together leading experts to present the latest evidence on the climate and nature crisis, and the ‘knock-on’ effect for issues such as food and national security, health and the economy, to politicians and other influential people in Westminster.

The NEB’s next step was to produce a 45 minute abridged film version so as to take this vital message across the UK, these screenings are designed and held for local communities to hear the evidence and discuss how to respond.

A community group along with the Town Council warmly invite you to come along and hear the facts and after, to share thoughts and ideas on how we might respond and prepare as a community.

Please note and respect- this is not a political event- all are very welcome and refreshments and food provided. We hope to see you there.
Saturday 13th June- 3pm to 5.45pm (film starts at 3.15)- Miners Chapel Room, St Just
Or Thursday 18th June- 6.45pm to 8.45pm (film starts at 7pm)- Centre of Pendeen.

Thanks Trudi for this great review of last night's networking event. Wasn't Rachel fab! And we had such a good discussion. I'm still processing it all but we've got a follow-up session at our next meetup in June, so let's use that to work out some next actions.

I went to a great neworking event with Far West Business Network last night, where Rachel Yates from Sustainable Penzance gave a fantastic talk and opened a discussion on sustainability. It didn't focus on everything that is wrong with the world (we all know about that) but was instead very positive and proactive in 'what can we do' - as individuals, as businesses and communities - to make the world we live in a better place to be.

It's not about changing the world, or making huge changes to the way we live - it's about shifting attitude and just being a bit more mindful about how we consume and use, discard and waste.

So a few takeaway easy practical things we can all do:

Use your own cup (travel mug) for takeaway tea and coffee

If you run a cafe - have a shelf of mugs for regulars to re-use. Flip your prices to show extra charge for takeaway cups rather than discount for own cups.

Use all the food in your fridge - if you have surplus, make something with it or freeze it

Don't buy more food than you need. If something is a good deal - don't let it go off, share it with a neighbour, friend or freeze it

Offer lifts to people if you're going to the same place

Try and make one journey for errands

Get the bus

Grow your own veg

Recycle what you can

Only fill the kettle for the amount of drink you want to drink

Switch lights off when you're not using them

The list goes on...

what ones would you suggest? I'd love to hear, comment below!!

I set up the Far West Business Network in March 2024 because I wanted to bring the local business community together, and create opportunities for other local businesses to get to know each other and provide support for each other. Whether that’s practical advice to improve how we run our businesses or a bit of connection to help us feel less isolated in what we do.

The focus is very much on community. I know as a business owner that things can feel a bit lonely at times, and I get so focused on what I’m doing that it can get overwhelming. I’m a web designer, so I basically spend my days sat at my computer interacting with my screen. Sometimes I won’t talk to another person or at best my interaction with other humans is over Zoom. But you know what, actually being in a room with other people, who understand what it’s like to run a business, makes a world of difference.

We're an informal and friendly group. I want us to build relationships within the group in a natural unpressured fashion and leave the meetings feeling like we’ve benefited in some way. There are no membership fees and the events are free (we just ask that you support the venue by buying yourself a drink and possibly some cake while you're there).

We meet on the second Tuesday of every month for a morning of networking at the Phoenix Café in St Just. And also hold quarterly evening events at various venues in the area. Talking of which ... our next evening event is this Thursday! If you'd like to come please book yourself a place here: https://www.farwestbusiness.co.uk/event/fwbn-evening-event-may-2026/
