1. Fire Risk Assessment — Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005
2. Legionella Risk Assessment — HSWA 1974 / COSHH
3. DSEAR Assessment — flammable or explosive substances
4. Asbestos Survey — any premises built before 2000
5. Noise Assessment — where levels regularly exceed 80 dB(A)
6. Dust Assessment — COSHH Regulations 2002
7. LEV Testing — thorough examination at least every 14 months
8. Fixed Wire Testing (EICR) — typically every 5 years
9. PAT Testing — portable electrical appliances
10. Lifting Equipment Inspection (LOLER) — every 6 or 12 months depending on equipment

"""I didn't know I needed that"" isn't a defence the HSE recognises.

Under the Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974, employers have a legal duty to ensure, so far as is reasonably practicable, the health, safety and welfare of everyone affected by their business — staff, visitors, and the public.

That duty comes with real teeth: the HSE can inspect without warning, issue improvement and prohibition notices, and prosecute — with fines running into hundreds of thousands of pounds, and in serious cases, personal liability for directors.

Not knowing isn't the same as not being liable."

"Being ""fully compliant"" doesn't mean a drawer full of certificates you hope nobody asks about. It means being able to answer, clearly:

✅ Which external assessments apply to our business
✅ When each one was last carried out — and when it's due again
✅ Who the competent person or contractor is for each one
✅ What we'd show an HSE inspector if they walked in today
✅ Who owns this internally, so it doesn't quietly lapse

That's the difference between a policy on paper and genuine assurance."

"Some of the biggest compliance gaps aren't dramatic — they're just easy to overlook:

🔸 A small office water tank that's never had a Legionella assessment
🔸 A garage storing a bit of petrol that technically needs a DSEAR assessment
🔸 A pre-2000 building with no asbestos survey on file
🔸 Ear defenders handed out, but noise levels never formally measured
🔸 An LEV system installed years ago and never tested since

None of these look serious on their own. Together, they're exactly what an HSE inspector is trained to find."
