Health surveillance isn't the same as a health check.

Some occupational health conditions develop gradually, which means harmful exposure may be taking place long before symptoms become obvious.

So ask yourself:
🩺 Have you identified employees who may require health surveillance?
📋 Is the appropriate surveillance actually being carried out?
🔄 Is it ongoing rather than treated as a one-off exercise?
⚠️ Are findings and concerns being acted upon?

Health surveillance doesn't replace effective controls; it works alongside them.

Does your RPE actually fit?

Providing respiratory protective equipment is one thing. Knowing whether it will protect the person wearing it is another.

In a recent Cornwall HSE prosecution, workers exposed to wood dust had not been face-fit tested for the RPE they were using. RPE should also form part of a wider system of control - not simply become the default solution.

If your employees use tight-fitting RPE, consider:
😷 Is the RPE suitable for the task and hazard?
✅ Have wearers been appropriately face-fit tested?
📋 Are records current and available?
👷 Do employees know how to correctly use and maintain their RPE?
