Ever wondered why w**e bottles are almost always 750ml? It turns out there’s a fascinating mix of history, craftsmanship and practicality behind it.
Originally, w**e bottles were hand-blown by glassmakers. The amount of glass a skilled glassblower could blow in one breath was typically around 700–800 ml, with 750ml becoming the most consistent and repeatable size. Over time, this naturally became the norm.
Later on, trade played a big role too. When w**e was exported between Europe and the UK, measurements had to make sense across different systems. Six 750ml bottles equal 4.5 litres, which is exactly one imperial gallon. Making it much easier for shipping, pricing and taxation.
The result? A bottle size that was easy to make, easy to transport, and easy to standardise, and one that’s stuck with us for centuries
