At Leaton Forest, We've been growing and caring for English Cricket Bat Willow (Salix Alba Caerulea) for over 40 years.

Over the last 15 years, we have been working in partnership with J S Wright & Sons, who play a major part in the planting, care, harvesting and conversion of English Cricket Bat Williow, grown in the UK, into cricket bats that are used across the world.

Back in January - J S Wright & Sons, planted a large number of "Tods" (a 16-foot tall, young willow sapling) across Leaton Forest as part of the annual restocking program, along with a few new areas .

These "Tods" are planted in nurseries, riverbanks and/or floodplains and spend up to 15 to 20 years to reach the optimal trunk diameter needed to make professional-grade cricket bats.

They provide a number of environmental and ecological benefits, stabilising banks to water courses and ponds, along with various insects and mamals calling them home, during thier growing period.

Pruning is essential to produce the clean, straight timber;

Side shoots and branches must be systematically removed two to three times a year - each year, to prevent knots and ensure unblemished wood.

Its that time of year again..

Farmers are busy mowing, baling, wrapping and collecting in hay, hailage and silage.

Working late into the night over the weekend, across Leaton Forest and the Leaton Knolls Estate.

Farmers dont stop working, until the work is done.

A busy week in the Christmas tree plantations - Pruning and Top Stop work.

We top stop nip, every year, when the new growth starts to flush.

This technique is used to force the tree to divert some of its hormones and energy away from the upward growth into sideways growth, safely shortening the leader and encouraging the tree to grow more densily.
