Sunderland entrepreneur opens dream bookshop! 💖 📖

A former nurse has turned her lifelong love of books into a new independent bookshop and tearoom in Sunderland city centre, with support from the North East BIC helping her navigate the journey into business.

Hayley Beckinsale opened Chapter 13 on Frederick Street in Sunderland on 13th July, following a 16-year career in nursing.

The independent bookshop and tearoom has been created as a welcoming, relaxed space where customers can browse new and pre-loved books, enjoy a coffee and spend time with friends or simply settle down with a book of their own.

Chapter 13 stocks a carefully curated selection of books, with a particular focus on romance, fantasy, thrillers and contemporary fiction, alongside children’s books, book-related gifts and accessories. Its tearoom offers coffee, tea, hot chocolate and light refreshments.

The ‘Should I Scale or Should I Grow?’ event aims to provide the region’s businesses with clarity, direction and a plan for scaling.

Andrew has spent over 20 years leading businesses from start-up through to scale and now helps other founders and leadership teams navigate that journey.

As a Vistage Chair, he runs six CEO coaching groups across the North East, working with business owners who are serious about making the right decisions at the right time.

During the event, he will unpack the real differences between growing and scaling, the stages businesses typically move through and how the founder’s role needs to evolve as a business becomes bigger and more complex.

Meet the Sunderland coach transforming lives through community fitness! 🏋️‍♂️

Team Dynamic was founded by South Shields-born fitness coach Adam Smith after years of working with clients whose goal extended far beyond getting fitter or losing weight.

After seeing first-hand the difference tailored coaching could make, he began delivering community-based rehabilitation classes, creating an inclusive and supportive environment where people could improve not only their physical health, but also their mental wellbeing, confidence and social connections.

Howell Studios celebrates expansion! 🎥

Howell Studios is celebrating the expansion of its podcast-focused TV facility into a larger space at the North East BIC less than a year after its founding.

Launched in December 2025, Howell Studios was born out of a conversation on owners and father-and-daughter duo, Chris and Issy Howell’s podcast, Looks Like We Made It.

Just nine months in, the company has scaled to cater to an expanding mix of regional and national clients – moving into its second and largest office at the BIC to keep up with demand.
