Hello September 👋

Apparently we’re all meant to be feeling refreshed, organised and ready for a “fresh start” now.

We’re not sure who decided that…

September always feels a little bit like someone has pressed the reset button without actually checking whether we were finished with August first.

🔸The inbox is still full.
🔸The to-do list hasn’t magically disappeared.
🔸And there’s probably still a holiday washing pile lurking somewhere.

But there is something we do like about this time of year. Not the pressure to start again… but the chance to pause and think about what’s actually working.

🔸What needs a little attention?
🔸What have we been putting off?
🔸And most importantly, what can we stop making unnecessarily complicated?

That applies to work too.

September can be a good time to look at the things that have slipped down the priority list over the summer… your HR processes, policies, contracts, employee issues, or those jobs that have been living firmly in the “I’ll get to that” category.

No dramatic reinvention required, sometimes a bit of a tidy-up is enough.

So, September… let’s see what you’ve got.

What’s one thing you’d like to get sorted this month?

Back from holiday… but still off work 😌

And I’m quite happy to keep it that way until next week!

There’s lots to do, lots to focus on and some pretty big plans for FARRELL HR taking shape for September and beyond.

We’ve got new clients getting started with us across September and October, plenty of exciting work in the pipeline, and a few things I’m really looking forward to sharing soon.

But today? No big agenda. Well…. Unless you count the endless loads of washing 🤦🏼‍♀️

A bit of space to reset, get my head back in the game and enjoy that slightly strange period where you’re technically back home… but your brain is still somewhere on holiday! I’ve been disciplined and pretty much stayed out of my inbox.

Then it’s heads down and onwards.

September is already looking busy in the best possible way.

And if you’re thinking about working with us over the coming months…

Hello, August 👋

Well, this month has crept up on me.

Summer holidays are in full swing, work is still busy (as always), and I’m trying to make the most of the slower moments in between. The juggle never really disappears… it just looks a little different right now.

August is also a special one for me. It’s my wedding anniversary and birthday month, so there are plenty of reasons to step away from the laptop and celebrate with my favourite people. 🥂

For now, it’s a case of keeping things moving, enjoying what’s left of summer, and remembering that not everything needs to be done today.

Wishing you a great month ahead.

What’s one thing you’re looking forward to this August?

The larger providers undoubtedly have their place, but if you’re looking for a different experience, here’s what you can expect from working with us:

🔸You get direct access to us: Founder Lorna,
and a small team of trusted advisors. No account managers, no being passed from person to person, no repeating your story every time you pick up the phone.

🔸We take the time to understand your business. Your people, your culture, your challenges and where you’re trying to get to.

🔸Advice that’s practical, commercial and tailored. Not a generic template or a tick-box approach.

🔸Flexibility. Your business isn’t static, so your HR support shouldn’t be either.

🔸A genuine partnership. Whatever the project, we become an extension of your team.

Sure, we have growth plans 👀 but we’re not trying to be the biggest.

We’d rather be the HR provider that knows your business inside out, are there when you need support, and gives honest, pragmatic advice that helps your business grow.

That’s the difference.

It’s going to be a brilliant afternoon of networking, BBQ, and some really valuable conversations across the HR community.

Not every workplace problem needs a new policy or process….

Sometimes it needs:

🔸A conversation.
🔸A manager willing to manage.
🔸Clear expectations.

29/06/2026

Which one have you heard…. or even said? 👇🏻

1. “Can we just get rid of them?”

“Maybe…but let’s talk through what’s happened first.”

2. “They’re self-employed…

….but they only work for us, wear our uniform, use our equipment, and work the hours we tell them.”

Are they though? 👀

3. “We’ve already told them they’re redundant…”

Most HR challenges are fixable. They’re just much easier to sort if you call before you act, not after.

Check out this snippet of my conversation with Chris for a special episode of the podcast. We recorded it at the Festival of Work a few weeks back.

𝗛𝗲𝗮𝘁𝘄𝗮𝘃𝗲 – 𝗗𝗼 𝗬𝗼𝘂 𝗡𝗲𝗲𝗱 𝗮𝗻 𝗘𝘅𝘁𝗿𝗲𝗺𝗲 𝗪𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿 𝗣𝗼𝗹𝗶𝗰𝘆?

Well hasn’t it been warm?! 🌞🕶️

With temperatures soaring this week, I’ve seen a few conversations about whether employers need a severe or extreme weather policy.

My view? Not necessarily.

If you’ve followed me for a while, you’ll know I’m not a fan of creating a policy for every possible scenario. Most situations can be handled perfectly well by treating people like adults, having sensible conversations, and applying a bit of trust.

That said, it’s worth thinking ahead and setting expectations.

What happens if schools close unexpectedly? What if travel becomes difficult? Can people work from home? Will flexibility be available if childcare arrangements fall through?

You don’t always need a standalone policy, but people do benefit from knowing where they stand and what support may be available if circumstances change.

Clear communication now can prevent confusion later.

If you’re unsure how to approach this in your business, get in touch…. Helping employers navigate the practical people stuff is exactly what I do.

Today’s Co Club lunch was uncomfortably warm, but absolutely worth it.

Great conversations, some brilliant people around the table, and plenty of ideas exchanged (mainly about staying cool in a heatwave).

Watch to the end for the real star of the show!

A special mention goes to and his air-conditioned car seats for providing what felt like luxury transport on the hottest day of the year.

Networking, good company, and a temporary escape from trying and failing to work at my desk. Not a bad way to spend a hot summer day!

Thanks and .co.uk ❤️
