Dino Otranto on the economics of electrification

Everything Electric Podcast

Sep 23, 2026

Fortescue CEO Dino Otranto joins Robert Llewellyn on the Everything Electric Podcast to talk about what it takes to electrify mining at scale.

Fortescue currently burns nearly a billion litres of diesel equivalent each year. Dino explains why moving away from fossil fuels isn’t just about reducing emissions.

The economics stack up too. From battery-electric haul trucks and heavy mining equipment to renewable power, batteries and Fortescue’s Green Grid in the Pilbara, the conversation explores the technology, infrastructure and economics behind Fortescue’s plan to eliminate emissions from its Australian iron ore operations by 2030, without voluntary carbon offsets.

Wales community energy funding boost:
Welsh community groups are to receive backing to develop and manage their own renewable power, with lower bills, stronger local economies and climate action as the goals.
Great British Energy (GB Energy) has committed ÂŁ30 million to community energy projects, and communities in Wales stand to benefit. Ministers say no other public commitment to community energy in the UK has been this large. The idea is that local residents should have more say over how their electricity is produced and who gets the financial return.
The programme is expected to build on work already under way in Wales through the Welsh Government Energy Service.
The funding can go towards rooftop solar on local buildings, village-owned wind farms and small hydro schemes on rivers. Community groups will own these projects. The government says the model is intended to keep revenue in local hands rather than passing it to large energy firms.

Spanish manufacturing outperforms European peers:

Coface analysis finds output running 4% above pre-war levels, but a productivity shortfall could hold back competitiveness
Manufacturers in Spain have weathered recent shocks better than their counterparts in several of Europe's biggest economies. Output is now 4% higher than before the war in Ukraine began, according to fresh analysis from trade credit insurer Coface.
Coface said the gains have come from a broad spread of industries rather than a single winner. They include energy-intensive sectors such as paper, rubber and plastics.
Spain has also kept its slice of the EU manufacturing export market steady since 2015. Germany and France have both lost ground over the same period.
Lower labour costs may have cushioned Spanish producers against economic and geopolitical turbulence. Coface's figures show hourly manufacturing labour costs in 2025 sat 43% below Germany's, 40% below France's and 14% below Italy's.

Sea Level Rise Funding Targets Island States:

The UK will steer part of a ÂŁ330 million climate pledge towards low-lying nations facing an urgent risk from rising seas
The UK is set to direct support at the communities most exposed to rising sea levels. This builds on the ÂŁ330 million commitment the Foreign Secretary announced at New York Climate Week.
A share of the money is expected to be reserved specifically for tackling and limiting the effects of sea level rise in the years ahead. Chris Elmore MP, Minister for the Americas, Multilateral and Human Rights, set out the approach in an address to the UN.
Mr Elmore said low-lying states face an "urgent and unprecedented threat". Whether a state loses part or all of its territory, he said, the UK will look at each case on its own circumstances, including the wishes of the people affected.
He added that the UK has worked with the UN to gauge the scale of the risk and identify the priority areas.

Data Centre Power Demand Needs More Than Solar:

This is a press release from IDTechEx, republished in full.
Globally, most of the electricity used by data centres comes from fossil fuels. While data centre hyperscalers have long been offsetting this with market-based RECs (renewable energy certificates) and PPAs (power purchase agreements) from wind and solar projects, a transition to location-based and time-matched accounting is anticipated. This will demand new investment in low-carbon technologies that can meet the continuous power needs of data centres. IDTechEx's "Sustainability for Data Centres 2027-2037: Green Technologies, Market Forecasts, and Players" report analyses the role emerging clean energy technologies could play in data centre decarbonisation.
Is solar still the answer?

Solar power is intermittent and therefore unsuited to the continuous power demands of data centres. However, this can be addressed combining solar power with battery energy storage.

Personalised Energy Tariffs Could Help Millions:

This is a press release from Cornwall Insight, republished in full.
A new report launched today shows that millions of households, including night-shift workers, busy families, vulnerable and low-income customers, heat pump owners and those with home batteries, could be missing out on cheaper energy because smart tariffs aren't designed around how people actually live.
The report by Cornwall Insight, commissioned by Secure Meters - Being Smarter with Data and Metering - claims that by combining energy consumption data with demographic information, suppliers could design a new generation of time-of-use tariffs (TOU), shaped around real routines and real needs, so people could see what they would actually save, rather than a one-size-fits-all approach.

TOU tariffs offer cheaper electricity at certain times of day.

Nature-positive transport infrastructure initiative launched:
Governments push billions into biodiversity-conscious infrastructure planning
The International Institute for Sustainable Development (IISD) has partnered with WWF-US and other organisations to develop new approaches that embed nature-positive principles into how transport infrastructure is procured.
Transport and other large-scale infrastructure projects attract billions of pounds in investment from governments and development banks each year. By 2050, forecasts point to as much as 4.7 million km of new roads being built, alongside a fourfold expansion in port areas. While such projects can strengthen regional connectivity, they also risk driving habitat loss and fragmenting wildlife populations.
According to World Bank figures, over 80% of railway and road investment in 2017 came from public bodies and state-owned enterprises — meaning the vast majority of this spending runs through public procurement systems.
