Our sale had something for everyone, with strong interest and bidding across the board. We had posted our auction earlier than usual to account for the Bank Holiday weekend, which gave our buyers a greater opportunity to consider their bids. The lot that had drawn much of the pre-sale interest was the Austin 7. Not only did it look great in the saleroom but there are still many who remember the vehicle from its days on display at Flambards.

As anticipated the top lot of the day was the Austin 7. Fighting against some local interest, ultimately the buyer was from further afield and the car will be making its way to Leicestershire, where it will no doubt continue to be cherished. Another lot with a long journey in front of it is lot 1637. A charming image by Samuel Fulton, a British Victorian/20th century artist. The picture, titled ‘Best of Friends’ shows two dogs in a kennel made from an old barrel. Images such as these have a very broad appeal however there is a particularly strong demand on the Eastern seaboard of the United States. And so it proved in the sale of this lot, with strong bidding from the UK eventually being out run by a New York based buyer, for a hammer price of £2,400. Further good results in our picture section include an excellent image by the local artist Simeon Stafford, a view of St Ives and another work by renowned Victorian artist David James. The picture was typical of James’s genre, an expansive seascape with a rocky coastline and vessels on the horizon, the work sold for a hammer price of £1,150.
In recent days there has been a slight fall in the bullion price of gold. As a result, in general terms there was a slight softening of the highest prices paid, however the overall prices realised for gold jewellery was strong. We had a particularly fine Georgian ring set with a carnelian carved with the head of a Roman nobleman. Our silver section also had some very strong results, with a silver tray realising a substantial multi-estimate hammer price of £1,400. It was engraved with a charming local inscription.

Among lots in the balance of our auction there were a number of excellent and interesting results. Of note was lot 1138, a Travel Agents model of a Concorde. Not in the strongest condition, with a small amount of damage to an engine fairing and lacking its original stand, never-the-less it was vigorously fought for. The successful buyer is based in Europe. In addition, we offered a very interesting collection of late 19th/early 20th century Japanese prints. Again, it was well viewed and subject to strong bidding from both internet platforms. The lot eventually sold for £550 against an estimate of £50-80.
