At enTWine, we are proud of the support we've given to local charities since we launched six years ago.

On this International Day of Charity, we'd like to celebrate those charities - West Kent Mind, Tree of Hope, The Pickering Cancer Drop-In Centre, The Aid Shop by Refugease, The 3H Foundation and Nourish Community Foodbank.

At our Summer Festival, we raised funds for St George's Childcare with a mega wheelbarrow raffle!

St George’s is a registered charity and the only childcare provider in Tunbridge Wells offering free and subsidised places to families in need. Its Nursery, Preschool and Out of School Club offer childcare to children from 3 months to 11 years of age and, through its Assisted Childcare Places Scheme, the charity supports vulnerable children and parents facing challenges such as domestic abuse, mental health difficulties, illness and financial hardship.

It is only able to provide this vital support thanks to generous donations and fundraising events. Last year, St George's supported 10 families (11 children) through subsidised childcare, and it is committed to helping as many families as possible again this year.

The nursery currently cares for over 250 families and, as a not-for-profit organisation, any funds raised are either used to support its Assisted Places Scheme or reinvested directly into improving our facilities, resources, and learning environment for all children.

Two weeks today, we'll be online for an exciting enTWine meeting featuring a panel of special guests - Tunbridge Wells MP, Mike Martin; William Benson, Chief Executive of Tunbridge Wells Borough Council; and Councillor Justine Rutland, Deputy Leader of Tunbridge Wells Borough Council (and Cabinet member for Economic Development).

If you're attending that event and want to raise a topic with our panel members, you'll need to submit any questions by next Thursday, 10 September. We can't guarantee to ask all of the questions submitted.

Our meeting on Thursday 17 September will, of course, include one of our popular break-out rooms. As we return - for one night only - to Zoom for our meeting, we remember that our break-out rooms came from our launch period. We had so many members on-screen that we knew not everyone would get an opportunity to listen, share and benefit. So, we introduced break-out rooms.

We are excited to welcome a high profile panel of speakers to our next meeting on Thursday 17 September to answer members' questions about the current business climate in Tunbridge Wells and other pressing business issues that affect them.

Included in our panel is William Benson - who has kindly spoken to our members a couple of times over the past six years.

William has been Chief Executive of Tunbridge Wells Borough Council since 2009. Prior to that he was Deputy Chief Executive and has held a number of senior manager roles in local government. His background is in international development. He spent three years with the International Development Select Committee in the House of Commons and a period of time working within the voluntary sector.

William is a spokesperson for the sector on finance issues and chairs the Kent-wide grouping of chief executives and is a Fellow of the Royal Society for the encouragement of Arts, Manufactures and Commerce (FRSA).

A huge thank you to William for joining us, along with Mike Martin, MP for Tunbridge Wells and Cllr Justine Rutland. If you are a business owner in Tunbridge Wells and would like to listen, share and benefit with our members, email us on entw**[email protected]

Our panel of speakers at our meeting on Thursday 17 September includes Councillor Justine Rutland - who, like William Benson, has joined us at enTWine previously.

Justine has represented Culverden ward residents at Tunbridge Wells Borough Council (TWBC) since 2019 and is Cabinet Member for Economic Development and Deputy Leader of TWBC. Her cabinet portfolio comprises culture, events and tourism, along with supporting businesses in the Borough.

Justine chairs the Investment Advisory Panel, the cross-party group that oversees the management of Royal Victoria Place following its acquisition by TWBC in October 2023. She is a member of the town centre plan working group and also sits on the Royal Tunbridge Wells Together BID.

Our next meeting on Thursday 17 September will be our 25th event! It seems appropriate that we'll be meeting online - as that's where we started - and we are encouraging our members to have a glass of something in their hand to toast our Silver Anniversary!

Members who have been listening, sharing and benefiting with us since 2020 will remember the little bottles of w**e that were hand-delivered to everyone who joined us on our first night, to help us all feel connected.

We are very honoured to have Mike Martin, MP for Tunbridge Wells, join us online as part of our panel on the evening of Thursday 17 September.

The Liberal Democrat MP for Tunbridge Wells, Mike is a member of the Defence Select Committee, the Joint Committee on National Security Strategy, and Chair of the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Rearmament.

Mike is campaigning to revitalise the town centres of Tunbridge Wells and Paddock Wood—more leisure, retail and hospitality businesses and more for youngsters to do. He is also committed to getting the right infrastructure built for existing residents and new houses. That means more investment to upgrade our local water network and increase capacity at our local Water and Wastewater Treatment Works. It also means having enough GP surgeries and school places.

Mike is a former British army officer who served multiple tours in Helmand, Afghanistan. Since leaving the army, he has also had other leadership roles, including as a senior executive in a global charity working to bring different people and organisations together to solve problems.

Mike is a Senior Fellow at King’s College London – an expert in geopolitics and conflict – and the author of several books on psychology, conflict and travel.
