We often read or hear that spending time in nature is beneficial for us, but we don’t often get much detail about why. In my latest blog post: https://www.lucindaweis.com/blog-posts/nature-as-medicine, I share with you just some of the many ways in which nature boosts our mental, physical and emotional health. Once you’ve read it, you’ll be rushing to get out there! Please share the link with anyone you think may benefit - and I’d love to hear how nature benefits your health. 🍃💞🌼

… a client explored her relationship with rest. She shared how hard it can be to rest when there’s so much that needs her attention. Stopping to enjoy time to herself can lead her to feel guilty, self-indulgent and lazy. At my invitation, she slowed down and allowed herself just ‘to be’ in the wood. She noticed how the natural world is rarely in a rush and when it is (e.g a hunting creature), it takes time to rest. She noticed her nervous system calming, her heart-rate coming down and her sense of panic reducing. What’s more she also felt energised and calmly alert. She was surprised to hear of the many mental, physical and psychological benefits rest offers us. And left the session intending to give herself the permission more often to down tools and rest.

If you want to be effective in a rowing boat - and that usually means fast - the recovery phase is vital. If you rush forwards and backwards, you’ll just exhaust yourself. Very simply put, the rowing strike has two parts - the DRIVE where the oars are in the water and you’re pushing hard and fast with the legs, and the RECOVERY where you give yourself time to slow down and rest. Watch top class rowing and you’ll notice this rhythm. They are taking a moment to rest every stroke even when they’re performing at speed. If you feel you’re not being very effective in managing your multiple roles and responsibilities, perhaps it’s time to think about how often in the day you pause and rest🍃.

… an anxious client found a place in the woods where she felt emotionally and physically safe and secure. She spent time noticing what this feels like in her body and intensifying that feeling through breathing and physical movement. As I guided her to slowly imagine memories and experiences that activate her anxiety responses (fight/flight/freeze), she used movement and words to explore how she could defend and strengthen her boundaries. She left with greater confidence, feeling less of a victim to her anxiety.
