An update from North Tyneside Council:

We wanted to provide a further update regarding the plastic pellets, known as nurdles, that have washed up on parts of the North Tyneside coastline.

A significant recovery operation remains underway, with council teams working alongside specialist contractor Briggs Marine to remove nurdles from affected beaches. Additional equipment and resources are being deployed to increase recovery capacity.

The response is being coordinated through the Local Resilience Forum and involves local authorities, environmental agencies, contractors, insurers and other partners. Daily multi-agency recovery meetings are helping to prioritise activity and ensure work progresses safely and efficiently.

Current public health advice remains that the risk to people is very low. The pellets are not toxic, beaches remain open, and there is no recommendation to avoid coastal or water-based activities. We continue to encourage residents and visitors to enjoy our coastline while following any advice in place.

Yesterday morning the team attended North Tyneside Council's Business Engagement Breakfast.

It was a chance to connect and update businesses on what support is available through our programme, as well as the wider Borough plans to encourage recruitment and investment in our local economy.

With more events like these planned throughout the year, we will continue to drive economic growth in North Tyneside, and encourage more investment in to our Borough.
