Janet Leach pottery in auction at Griffin’s 🏺🪳💧

Tomorrow’s Antiques & Interiors auction at Griffin’s Auctioneers features these two incredible Janet Leach (American, 1918-1997) vases. The two vases, vastly different in style from one another, are both excellent examples of Leach Studio Pottery.

Leach pottery is hugely popular at present with its subtle tones and uncomplicated design. Whilst many may initially learn of Leach pottery through the work of her husband Bernard Leach (British, 1887-1979), Janet had a resoundingly interesting career in pottery.

Born in Texas, she enrolled in pottery classes in 1947, having previously studied Sculpture in New York. During the war, Leach had worked as a welder on Staten Island. After studying pottery at Black Mountain, North Carolina under Shoji Hamada, a visiting artisan, she traveled to Japan to work with him. She became the first woman to study pottery in Japan under his tutorship.

She returned from Japan in 1955 and married Bernard Leach, they operated the Leach pottery studio in St. Ives, Cornwall. Her work always took inspiration from her time in Japan, and her works have gained significant popularity in recent years. Her artistic background has meant that her style had a unique quality, separate from the work of her husband. Focussing more on free flowing form, with Japanese influence.

There have been a number of UK Janet Leach solo exhibitions and the Tate St. Ives held her retrospective in 2006.
