🎃🔥 HALLOWEEN IS HERE. IS YOUR SITE READY FOR BONFIRE NIGHT?

With Halloween tonight and Bonfire Night on 5 November approaching, it's worth another look at your site's security.

For construction sites, warehouses, and commercial premises, this period can increase the risk of trespassing, vandalism, deliberate fires, and unauthorised access.

🛡️ 5 THINGS WORTH CHECKING BEFORE THE WEEKEND:

🔥 Fire hazards – Are combustible materials and waste stored safely?

💡 Lighting – Are vulnerable areas properly illuminated?

🚧 Perimeter security – Are fences, gates and access points secure?

⛽ Fuel and equipment – Are high-risk materials protected from unauthorised access?

🚨 Out-of-hours response – Who's responsible if something happens when the site is closed?

A few preventative checks today could save a serious problem tomorrow.

At KWS Security, we support businesses with professional SIA-licensed security officers, NASDU-trained K9 dog handlers and mobile security patrols.

We also work with other security companies requiring dependable subcontracting support.

🚨 YOUR FENCE MIGHT BE SECURE. BUT WHAT ABOUT THE SKY ABOVE IT? 🚁

A drone can fly over your site in seconds, identify CCTV blind spots, monitor security patrols and gather valuable information, without anyone stepping through the gate.

Drone threats are changing the way UK businesses need to think about security.

⚠️ From construction sites and warehouses to logistics centres and critical infrastructure, the risks are real.

But here’s the important question:

How do you protect your site from something you might not even notice?

Effective counter-drone security starts with detection, awareness and a clear response plan, not jamming or bringing drones down.

At KWS Security, we believe protecting your premises means looking beyond the perimeter fence.

LONE WORKING IN SECURITY: WHAT THE LAW EXPECTS AND WHAT YOU SHOULD ASK YOUR PROVIDER

A night gate officer. A mobile patrol driver between sites. A keyholder opening an alarmed building at 3am. Each one is working alone, and each is likely to be first on scene when something goes wrong.

Lone working is legal and normal in our industry. But the risks must be assessed and managed before anyone is left alone, and that duty sits with the employer.

There is also a change coming this month. Employers will be expected to take reasonable steps to protect staff from harassment by third parties, such as visitors, customers and the public. For officers on gates, receptions and doors, those are the people they deal with every shift.

Our guide covers what the law requires, how to build a proper lone-worker risk assessment, why check-ins and radios only work if someone is listening, and five questions to ask any security provider before you sign.

🚧 HI-VIS JACKET. COMPANY VAN. CONFIDENT DRIVER. BUT ARE THEY ACTUALLY SUPPOSED TO BE ON YOUR SITE?

It’s a busy morning at a construction site. Deliveries are arriving, contractors are waiting, and someone at the gate says they’re running late.

It’s tempting to just let them through.

But looking like you belong doesn’t mean you should have access.

At KWS Security, we know that protecting a site isn’t just about keeping unwanted people out. It’s about making sure the right people get in, for the right reasons.

That means:

✅ Checking visitors and confirming who they’re meeting.

✅ Making sure contractors are expected and have the right permissions.

✅ Verifying vehicle access before opening the barrier.

✅ Keeping clear records of who enters, who leaves and when.

✅ Knowing when to refuse entry and who to contact if there’s a problem.

Whether it’s a construction site, warehouse, logistics yard or commercial property, a gate is only as secure as the checks behind it.

And sometimes, the most important part of a security officer’s job is simply knowing when not to open it.

We’ve covered this in more detail in our latest article:

Short on officers? We can help.

Winning new contracts is good news. Finding enough licensed people to cover them is where it gets hard. Sickness, a last-minute event, a new site going live, a busy Christmas period. A gap on the rota costs you money and puts your client’s trust at risk.

KWS Security supports other security companies by supplying extra officers when you need them.

What you get:
✔ SIA-licensed officers, with licence details sent before they start so you can check them on the SIA register
✔ K9 handlers trained to NASDU standards
✔ Manned guarding and mobile patrols
✔ Officers who work to your site instructions and your standards
✔ Simple terms, tidy paperwork and one person to call when plans change

Short notice or long term, one-off or ongoing. We arrive on time and ensure your client sees a professional team on site.

If you run a security company and need a reliable partner, send us a message or give us a call.

RETAIL SECURITY IN PEAK TRADING SEASON: PROTECTING STAFF, STOCK AND SHOPPERS

Black Friday, Christmas, and the January sales bring in the best turnover of the year, and the highest risk. Footfall spikes, queues lengthen, tempers shorten, and shrinkage climbs. A security plan built for an average Tuesday won't survive a December weekend.

We've put together a practical guide covering what actually matters during peak trading: protecting people before stock, spotting organised theft rather than just opportunists, managing crowds safely at busy door openings, making sure CCTV is actually working when it counts, and supporting staff through long, high-pressure shifts.

If you're planning cover for your next peak trading period, it's worth a read before the rush hits.
