✨ Word Nerd Moment! ✨

Some words in English love to play tricks on us. They sound similar, they look similar… and yet they mean totally different things. One of the sneakiest pairs? 👇

💜 Complement vs. Compliment 💜

✒️ Complement = to complete or go well with something.
Example: That scarf really complements her outfit.

🗣️ Compliment = a nice remark or bit of praise.
Example: He gave her a compliment on her writing.

👉 A scarf can complement your outfit, but a friend gives you a compliment about it.

Easy mix-up, right?
That’s why a proofreader is so handy—we catch these little slips so your writing says exactly what you mean.

📚 Did You Know? The Curious Case of “Gadsby”

Ernest Vincent Wright’s novel Gadsby is a literary marvel—not for its plot, but for its unique challenge: the entire 50,000-word novel doesn’t contain a single occurrence of the letter “e.”

This type of writing is called a lipogram, where certain letters are deliberately avoided. What’s even more impressive is that “e” is the most commonly used letter in the English language, making Wright’s achievement even more remarkable!

Why did he do it? Wright wanted to prove that the English language was flexible enough to tell a compelling story without relying on its most frequent character. Despite its constraints, Gadsby remains an intriguing read for both literary enthusiasts and writers.

Would you dare try writing a story without using the letter “e”?

The Power of Words: Tackling Controversy in Writing

In today’s world, words carry more weight than ever before. As writers, proofreaders, and editors, we often find ourselves navigating the fine line between creativity and controversy. One of the most debated topics in writing? The use of inclusive language.

Whether it’s opting for gender-neutral pronouns, addressing cultural sensitivities, or adapting historical texts for modern audiences, language evolves—and so must we. But change isn’t always easy. Some argue that singular “they” feels awkward or that traditional terms carry more gravitas. Others emphasise that inclusive writing isn’t just a trend; it’s about respect, accessibility, and building connections.

At AP Proofreading and Copy Editing, I understand the complexities of this debate. My job isn’t just to spot typos or fix grammar—it’s to help you craft clear, compelling, and thoughtful content. I know that even small changes can make a big impact, and I’m here to guide you through these linguistic challenges.

Are you struggling to strike the right tone? Unsure how to adapt your writing for diverse audiences? Let me help you navigate the evolving landscape of language.
