Let's ask an uncomfortable question - what would your suppliers say about your marketplace?

Would they describe it as accessible or would it be a different story?

Many organisations feel they are fully committed to increasing SME participation and strengthening supplier engagement.

But intentions and outcomes aren't always the same thing.

Accessibility isn't about intention but about experience.

The organisations achieving the strongest supplier engagement aren't making assumptions.

They're understanding where barriers exist and taking clear actions to remove them.

If public sector organisations want to increase SME participation, procurement design is crucial.

The latest SME Procurement Tracker highlights that SMEs tend to perform better in sectors where contract values are lower and opportunities are more accessible.

The report suggests that breaking up larger contracts into appropriate lots could create more realistic opportunities for SMEs to bid, compete and deliver.

As organisations work towards increasing SME spending, creating opportunities that are genuinely accessible to SMEs is becoming ever more important.

At Go4Growth, we help organisations to create more accessible procurement opportunities, opening the door to SMEs and VCSEs that can sometimes be overlooked despite offering valuable expertise and fresh perspectives.

Across our programmes, we’ve seen a 70% increase in engagement with procurement opportunities where barriers are reduced and suppliers are better supported.

How is your organisation ensuring that these smaller suppliers have a fair opportunity to compete?

You've completed the initial accessibility survey and got your score.

But do you fully understand what's behind it?

Our Marketplace Accessibility Assessment provides an deeper look into how you go to market and crucially how you approach accessibility for providers and gives you a detailed implementation plan to be able to reach more small, local businesses and VCSEs through your procurement.

Because sometimes understanding the headline isn't enough.

You also need to understand where barriers exist, what's affecting supplier participation and where improvements will have the greatest impact.

That's why we've designed our bespoke Marketplace Accessibility Assessment to fill this gap.

Providing a detailed diagnostic review, tailored recommendations and a prioritised roadmap, it can help you improve accessibility, strengthen supplier confidence and deliver better outcomes.

Organisations using this approach will typically generate around £68,000 of upstream supplier facing impact as a result.

You've completed the assessment.

But now what?

Your score certainly isn't about passing or failing, it's all about understanding your current position.

The Marketplace Accessibility Assessment helps identify strengths, highlight potential barriers and uncover opportunities for improvement.

Because meaningful change starts with understanding where you are right now.

Some organisations may discover they're already creating accessible opportunities for suppliers.

Others may uncover challenges they didn't realise existed.

The important thing isn't the score itself.

It's what you do next with the insight.

Accessibility can no longer be an afterthought.

Organisations achieving the strongest SME engagement are building accessibility into procurement from the start.

Why?

Because accessible procurement creates significantly better outcomes.

✔ More supplier participation.
✔ More competition.
✔ Stronger local supply chains.
✔ Greater social value.

The question is no longer whether accessibility matters.

It's how your organisation can improve it.

While many public sector organisations are working to increase SME participation, Local Government continues to be at the forefront of change.

According to the SME Procurement Tracker, 34% of local government procurement spend now goes directly to SMEs which is the highest proportion across the public sector.

This represents a huge cultural shift.

Successful organisations understand that increasing SME participation requires not just proactive supplier engagement but accessible procurement processes and a commitment to opening up opportunities to a more diverse range of businesses.

As pressure grows to improve SME spending performance, all sectors need to expedite their SME engagement and better understand their accessibility.

Through our work with both buyers and suppliers, at Go4Growth we see first hand how meaningful engagement can help organisations increase SME participation and strengthen local supply chains.

We're delighted that around 1 in 3 successful suppliers supported through our programmes are estimated to be entering public sector procurement for the first time.

How can your organisation do more to engage SMEs and create more accessible procurement opportunities?

20/08/2026

SME procurement is showing clear progress across the public sector, but significant gaps remain in how consistently targets are being achieved.

The latest SME Procurement Tracker highlights that 21% of direct public sector procurement spend went to SMEs in 2025 alongside £45.2 billion in spend with smaller businesses.

But the data also shows a more complex picture with Central Government still behind SME spending targets while Local Government continues to lead the way through sustained engagement and accessibility.

At Go4Growth, we help public sector organisations turn insight into action by improving supplier engagement and creating more accessible procurement markets for SMEs.

To date, we've engaged more than 27,000 suppliers, helping organisations build stronger and more competitive supply chains.

Whatever your ambition, we’ve got the tools, insight and support to help you make a difference:

The targets may have been set but can organisations realistically achieve these, or even get close?

The latest SME Procurement Tracker shows that public sector procurement teams are facing huge challenges.

While SME spending is increasing overall, Central Government departments are still on average 8.4 percentage points below their new SME spending targets.

Closing that gap will be challenging.

It will mean adjusting procurement processes, improving supplier engagement, increasing market accessibility and creating opportunities that enable SMEs to compete effectively.

For many organisations, the challenge isn't understanding the target but knowing how to achieve it.

That's why supplier engagement is so important.

At Go4Growth, we've seen how targeted engagement and practical support can support organisations in creating more opportunities for SMEs and VCSEs to participate in procurement.

The evidence is clear as our programmes have supported a 30% increase in awarded work to SMEs and VCSEs.

This suggests that achieving SME spending targets isn't just about setting ambitions.

It's about creating the right conditions for smaller businesses to engage, compete and succeed.

We support public sector organisations to identify barriers to SME participation and develop practical approaches that help drive engagement and improve procurement outcomes.
